Should I clear ice from the blind area of the house in spring?
This year, spring came to Russia much earlier than usual, and many have already rushed to "help" spring win winter: they clear the beds of snow with might and main, throw off snow from flat roofs and beat off the ice accumulated over the winter on blind area.
Some even throw the last snow into the greenhouse.
Is it necessary to clean the blind area from snow and ice?
In most cities, utilities never do this, and they do it right! Let's figure out why. The answer lies in the functions of the blind area:
- protection of the foundation from moisture;
- drainage of sediment water from the house;
- insulation of the basement of the house;
So what do you do when you clean the blind area as shown in the photo above?
Take a closer look at the picture: you have exposed the blind area, and a bunch of pressed snow remained on the lawn (thickness of 40 centimeters, no less). And when the air temperature rises, all the water will rush to the lowest place - to the blind area.
This is fraught with flooding of the basement and a collection of moisture in the foundation. You understand the consequences yourself.
In addition, the blind area, covered with a layer of snow, will not let the cold into the basementif suddenly the temperature drops again. And in spring, temperature swings are the norm.
It turns out that it makes sense to clean the blind area only together with 2-3 meters of the territory closest to it - and here you will have to throw a lot of snow. Also, make sure that your blind area has a slope of at least 6 degrees from the wall of the house.
