Sowed butternut pumpkin today, took into account the mistakes of the past
Difference of butternut squash:
- The most thermophilic of pumpkins
- With small seeds
- At the same time, late maturing
- She is also our favorite: soft aromatic sweet juicy, with orange pulp
These are my varieties:
There are other pumpkins, just now we are talking about these.
Family pumpkin also differs in that it has more than half of the fruit without emptiness and seeds.
The first butternut pumpkins I grew with sowing in open ground (without seedlings) with a shelter with hay. It was cold! Even frosts. But the warm compost, hay, apparently, warmed the seeds and seedlings well.
Theoretically, the air temperature is less than + 15 ° С, butternut pumpkins do not tolerate. Practically, they do it!
That is, there were no errors in terms of disembarkation time or temperature. Moreover, a warm May is now expected. Boldly sowed on a hot April day (Kursk).
What were the mistakes?
About the landing hole
Sowed earlier on the principle: hurry up. I threw small piles of compost and buried pumpkin seeds 5 centimeters deep. All!
This year I decided to make them depressions for the supply of nutrients, like these:
This hole was first poured with water (8 liters per hole), then a bucket of compost was poured into it:
She also poured water over everything. And then she sowed a seed.
Why a whole bucket of compost
All pumpkins love to eat. Highly! Including nutmeg. Everyone knows this, and I knew. However, when it comes to sowing, the pumpkin doesn't get much compost for some reason. It seemed that she had enough, because she was growing up normally. But!
I noticed that no, no, but some powdery mildew or other infection will stick. The clever pumpkin throws all her strength into the fruits, she herself becomes bald. This speaks of underfeeding! So this year, each seed got a bucket of compost.
One nutmeg "Family" got an additional funny bed of dandelions:
The grandson gathered in the garden, soaked it, the smell was already appropriate, so an exclusive fertilizer turned out.
About lighting
It is important to understand that with a lack of lighting, pumpkins gain nitrates at a frantic pace. Therefore:
- They are sown in the sunniest places
- It is problematic to grow seedlings, the seedling gets less light through glass or polycarbonate.
That's all I wanted to share!
