Meeting with rhubarb 30 years later
For the first time I tried vegetable rhubarb in a pie, my mother-in-law baked. Delicious filling! It was green rhubarb. Then I asked why he was?
For the mother-in-law, simplicity and taste mattered:
- Rhubarb can already be cut in early spring
- No special care needed
- Narwhal of petioles (stems), peeled a little, chopped, added sugar - this is already a favorite filling.
It turns out that rhubarb with a pink stem is sweet, dessert. And with green acid.
I forgot about this plant for a long time.
Suddenly, a subscriber sent a photo of the pie:
For grandchildren baked, they love.
He even showed how the skin is removed:
There are still hairs under the skin, very clearly. I was lucky with subscribers. If the rhubarb is very young, the skin is not removed.
And a photo of the rhubarb itself:
Handsome! Of course, first of all, I thought that I also want one! It can be grown from seeds. In the south where I lived, rhubarb was not grown at all.
The benefits of rhubarb
The Internet has suggested that rhubarb is very similar to apples in terms of useful substances. This is great! Rhubarb tastes like apples and composition.
Growing a tree is a long and troublesome business. And at the end of April, you can't collect apples for the filling. And rhubarb is a perennial herb. There is nowhere more unpretentious. And I don't want to tear!
Since this is an analogue of apples, it is not surprising that compotes and jams are made from it.
It is necessary to start harvesting the stalks from the second year. Collect only young petioles, and only before flowering. Then the plant produces a lot of oxalic acid. It blocks calcium and can lead to kidney stones. And who will collect old and already tough petioles? Young ones - that's what you need!
By the way, not all types of rhubarb are edible. In order not to doubt, it is better to buy seeds in a bag with an indication of what it is. Or dig up what they eat from friends.
Although... I wondered if it was worth growing rhubarb
I asked my friends what and how. Explained this way: once you plant it, it's forever! It can be removed only with an excavator bucket. So tenacious. This moment also stops!
Do you grow rhubarb? Would you advise to grow it?
I would be grateful for your subscription and communication :)
