A clear result of using raw boards in the rafter system. How much does the tree shrink, and what to do about it?
Wood is the most unpredictable material to work with. Especially when there is no experience and you do everything alone. Well, the result can be expected not what we would like ...
This article is about the obvious things that you know and think about, but you cannot get around.
Everyone knows that raw wood is larger in volume than dry. But how to keep the material dry during construction, no one says.
So at my construction site, I didn't really think about it.
When they brought me a more or less dry forest ...
Could I have thought that he would get wet for several months in the rains ???
Of course not!
But in the end, there was nowhere to go. And having covered the roof, I went into winter with damp boards.
Of course, there were problems with the formation of fungus ...
But I successfully coped with this, using various means (as it was read here).
And for several autumn, winter, and spring months, the rafter system dried out.
But new nuances appeared ...
Gaps between twin elements.
And those that overlap.
β It turns out that previously tightly connected parts now have mobility. But in my case, this is not so critical.
The rafter system is not yet filled with insulation, and all the pins can be safely tightened. So the slow construction process alone played into the hands here π.
βBut still, I wonder if such weakening affects the design if nothing is done about it? Who knows, write in the comments.
