Hello, friends.

I have seen many times on the Internet how holes with precise centering are drilled in a rod. Some did it, others didn't. The fact is that there are several important points without which the work is doomed to failure. I have not seen a word about this from other authors. Let's share my experience. I am sure it will be useful to someone.

A task

A silumin “nipple” (I don’t know what it’s called correctly) was scattered in the kitchen sink. Outside there is a thread, inside there is a hole for the stem, there are turnkey edges. The ideal blank for such a product is a standard bolt. You just need to drill a hole in it exactly in the center. A thin wall remains. There is no room for error. Go.

Such a nipple holds a siphon and a strainer valve on the kitchen sink.

Markup

Using a ruler, I connect the bolt faces with a needle. Kernu intersection point (Required!).

The first time I hoped the drill would center during rotation. As a result, the output is offset from the center. That won't do!

Hole centering

Here they mow the most. You need to drill in two steps! First with a small diameter drill, and then with a working diameter. That's why:

To prevent the drill from moving away from the center, you need to drill at high speeds. Then, due to rotation, it will tend to the center.
Making a hole at once with a large diameter drill at high speeds will not work. A very high linear velocity will be obtained on the outside of the cutting edge. The drill will overheat, dull and burn out.

In order not to spoil the thread, I make several turns of electrical tape on it (where can I do without it =)). I clamp the bolt into the drill chuck. I take the drill with pliers, put it in the center, start the drill at maximum speed. I press lightly - in a minute the hole is ready.

I make a centering pilot hole with a small diameter drill.
Of course, instead of pliers, it is better to use a screwdriver. But mine was in the village =)

We drill a hole

We drill a hole with the main diameter at low speeds! The pilot hole is already there, so it will not move away from the center.

It will be difficult to push the drill by hand. I rest it against a wooden lining (while holding it with pliers).

I drill a hole for the working diameter.

Make sure that the drill does not overheat. A couple of minutes and the hole is ready. As you can see, the alignment is quite accurate.

We can say that the homemade nipple for the kitchen sink is ready. The big hat does not interfere in my case. If necessary, it can be ground in emery.
