I couldn't grow parsnips. Found a reason

click fraud protection

Every time my seeds were as fresh as possible, but they did not sprout. I thought on the ground that it was not suitable, and for watering, which I did not water much. Once she complained in the comments about her problem, and received a letter with advice and a photo of parsnips. I share! Let's try together now.

Why parsnips are good

I knew that it was added to soups and pickles. In the markets and in stores, I have never seen it fresh on sale, so the vegetable is rare, I need to tell you more about it.

The parsnip root looks like this:

Parsnip
Parsnip

Refers to umbrella. The list of useful elements and vitamins in parsnips is impressive: magnesium, calcium, sodium, manganese, potassium, selenium, zinc, copper, phosphorus and chlorine, iron, vitamins C, K, A, almost all B vitamins. It has a high content of sulfur and silicon.

Parsnips contain high concentration of essential oils and a number of complex beneficial ingredients. And, of course, proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

I will not write about the benefits for various diseases, it annoys some subscribers. But what concerns everyone: parsnips increase appetite, digestion is faster, the work of the endocrine glands is activated. The body's metabolism is regulated, including hormonal.

I understand, in a simple way, that a person eats with appetite and then feels good. The efficiency is correspondingly increased.

Definitely a useful vegetable! And the leaves are useful, they contain the same substances, only in different quantities.

Now about growing

First, I will describe what and how the experienced gardener, the author of the letter, did. And what's next

I did not do what I did not understand. I am publishing the letter in full. Here is such a huge root he has grown this year, worthy of respect:

How to sow parsnips so that it sprouts and grows

Once parsnip seeds fell into my hands. I've heard something about him. But I never met him. Even in stores I have not seen the roots of this plant.

And here are the seeds in my hands. We decided to put the stranger on waste land under a spreading apple tree. In the spring it is light under the tree. And in the summer this area is in the shade. Sowed without fuss, as it was written on the package. Then I found out that I was just very lucky with the weather, the seeds did not dry out, but rose.

In the middle of summer, a small rosette has grown. I decided to taste the leaves. The taste was incomprehensible and not even tasty. And on top of that, the leaves were tough. Interest in this plant has disappeared completely. But they did not remove the bed. And let it grow, maybe it tastes better.

Parsnip leaves

Parsnips have a leaf similar to a daikon leaf. Only the daikon has it stretching upward, the parsnip has a leaf spreading along the ground.

And then autumn came. The turn came to the parsnip bed. I took a pitchfork for digging. What a surprise it was when large rhizomes with a pleasant smell began to pull out of the ground. Suddenly! The root vegetable bucket was a surprise.

It remains then to figure out how to use them. Cook's books suggested that these roots give the soups an extraordinary taste. And so it happened. The soup tastes and aromas were unmatched. And we started to respect this plant.

Since then we have been trying to plant parsnips. And already for him we are preparing a bed in a place of honor. Parsnip loves partial shade. In the morning he likes the sun, and in the evening, the shade.

I'm going to dig up some roots this year. I'll leave the rest for later. Parsnips winters very well. And therefore, it makes no sense to pull the entire crop out of the ground. We will take it as needed.

2020 season parsnip

Growing parsnips requires a lot of patience. He gets up very hard. And every time there is no certainty that he will rise.

First, you need to have fresh seeds. Secondly, create good conditions for the seeds. This means that the seeds must be soaked. In multiple waters to wash off essential oils. Then it would be nice to put these seeds in a bundle and bury them somewhere in the shade in damp ground. Just for a few days. At this time, we shed a good bed. Let it moisturize deeply. Fluff the bed well before planting. Let the earth be dug deep.

Then we form the comb. And we plant in this wet comb in one line. We cover with agrofilm. We follow the seedlings. As soon as shoots appear, we remove the film. We carry out weeding. When it will be seen that the plants have begun to grow, you can forget about them. And just make sure that the weeds are not impudent.

I saw my mistakes

  • The main thing is that you did not soak the parsnip seeds.
  • I did not prepare a garden bed, there was no comb, nor well-spilled soil. Parsnips should be planted late, after May 25, they are thermophilic. At this time, we already have a hot desert.
  • Didn't cover the garden
  • I planted it in the sun, but it should be in partial shade
  • I didn’t know that it took so long to sprout, I forgot to water, I thought that they didn’t come up and that was all.

Well now, hopefully, we will have parsnips!

Have you grown this capricious root crop?

I would be grateful for your subscription and communication :)
