Fogging of glass units. How to deal with this problem?
The first frosts make themselves felt. Condensation appears on the windows. There are various reasons for the fogging of glass units. Starting from the natural dew point (from which, by the way, there is no escape), ending with jambs of installers and even window manufacturers. Let's figure it out.
When there is no cause for concern
Under certain conditions (humidity, temperatures in the room and outside), fogging is a natural process. The so-called "dew point" appears.
In practice late evening and early morning we see a slight fogging of the glass unit at the bottom of the frame. Drops don't run down and remain on the glass. After sunrise they evaporate and during the day everything is dry.
Themselves to blame
Abundant condensation when water flows down onto the windowsill shouldn't be. One of the reasons for its appearance is excessive humidity in the room:
- Many people live in a small apartment.
- The renovation has recently been completed and the plaster / putty is still drying.
- You often wash and hang linen in your apartment.
- Something is being cooked in the kitchen all the time.
These are contributing factors. And the root cause is insufficient air exchange, as a result - high humidity.
To get rid of fogging, we often open the window for airing. We check if the ventilation is working, and if necessary, we clean it.
If condensation appears only in severe frosts, the cause may be a wide window sill or blackout curtains.
Installers screwed up
If the humidity in the rooms is 30-40%, and the double-glazed windows are still very foggy, most likely this is the jamb of the window company.
If the installers have not foamed enough or not sufficiently sealed the junctions of the windows and walls, there will be “cold bridges” (freezing) in these areas.
A vivid manifestation of this problem - condensation appears pointwise in certain areas. It can also be along the contour of a double-glazed window, frame or at the junction of the window sill.
Fixing this problem is simple, but not easy. It is enough to foam the freezing areas and seal them. But usually installers don't want to do this. They deny it in every possible way and claim that they are not to blame for anything.
And if the final finishing has already been done, negotiations often come to a standstill. At whose expense to restore the slopes? To re-paste the wallpaper? Repainting the walls?
It happens that window manufacturers are to blame for everything.
Another common disease of plastic windows is that double-glazed windows fog up from the inside. There is only one reason for this - the leakage of the glass unit. If externally the glass is not burst, then their sealing is broken.
Non-sealed glass unit is being replaced. There are craftsmen who try to apply sealant around the perimeter. I highly doubt the effectiveness of this method. Better to demand replacement of the product.
