Why I won't plant two tomatoes in one hole

click fraud protection

I never thought that I would have to make such a "serious" decision: not to plant two tomatoes in one hole. It seemed obvious: why?

However, now the third person, authoritative, is planting this way. I decided to delve into it, maybe I don't understand something?

Looking ahead, I understood everything correctly. But since I have penetrated, I will share my thoughts. On the example of indeterminate tomatoes.

My indeterminate cherry is quite cramped, one in the hole, especially for large-fruited tomatoes

I'll start with the rule I learned from the agronomist: there should be seven stems of tall tomatoes per square meter, and what is their origin you decide.

That is, I have a garden bed in a greenhouse 60 cm wide, 6 m long, its area is 3.6 sq. m, multiply by the norm - 7 stems per sq. m, we get 25 stems. This is, for example, 12 tomatoes in 2 stems and one in one stem. There are 13 tomatoes in total. The distance between the bushes is approximately 45 cm.

If I wish, I can put these 13 tomatoes in 1 stem, they will be more spacious and they will get more food.

Remember, with a normal planting, I can get 13-25 stems.

And if I planted 2 in one hole

A distance of 60 cm is recommended between pairs of indeterminate tomatoes (there are recommendations and 65-70 cm). And the bushes themselves do not grow close, but between them 12-20 centimeters. A narrow six-meter bed will fit 8 pairs, that is, 16 plants. They are advised to lead them in 1 stem each. Moreover, carefully monitor, exclude thickening.

We'll stuff the extra three plants, add some hassle, is it worth it? These are 3 extra seedlings, and the harvest will be with 16 stems! Less than a normal landing! 16 is less than 25!

Moreover, not all varieties can be planted 2 in one hole. Not strongly leafy. And on packages this moment is not often highlighted. But almost all the bags say: form into 1 stem. Although it is really possible in 2 and 3, as it turns out later. So the criterion for forming one stem is unreliable. Someone will plant strongly leafy varieties or hybrids and get exhausted.

When this way makes sense

The only meaning I see in two tomatoes in one hole is to study different varieties. 16 instead of 13. But the varieties will not reveal their potential in such an uncomfortable tandem. So the meaning is dubious.

Even less convincing is the idea that when planting 2 tomatoes in one hole, the harvest will be earlier, and the fruits will be larger.

I have not read any proof of this dream of any gardener. Like, I planted one row as usual, and the second, two in one hole. On the second, tomatoes began to ripen a week (two or three) earlier, and they were, they say, larger. There was no such evidence. There is: "I did not see the difference."

Cherry in our greenhouse, already eaten some

The only meaning is, "I like planting like this." You can't argue with that. Or someone got too many seedlings. Well then, what to do, really?

If I get more seedlings than necessary, I move some varieties into open ground. Why do I need extra work with a couple of bushes in one hole? Moreover, diseases can come upon thickening.

Your opinion is interesting, except what you like or dislike the way.

I would be grateful for your subscription and communication :)
