I'm testing a step drill from China. The result surprised me!
Not so long ago, I came across step drills on Aliexpress, which were sold in a small set and, despite the ridiculous price, there were many positive reviews on the product! I hardly believed that the drills were of good quality, because in our stores the price tag for them is much higher, but I still decided to order and test them.
The set consists of 6 items, and its cost is only 650 rubles. It includes 3 step drills (5 step drill with a diameter of 4 - 12 mm, a 9 step drill with 4 - 20 mm diameter and a 15 step drill with a 4 - 32 mm diameter).
And also here are such 3 drills (cutters) with a diameter of 3, 6 and 8 mm, with which you can make grooves (grooves). I will not consider them and we will immediately let's move on to testing step drills.
According to the seller, the drills are suitable for drilling holes in materials such as steel of various grades, plastic, wood and others.
Let's see what step drills from China are capable of
! I'll start the test with the lightest: wood and plastic. Here, as expected, the drills coped without any problems.Let's see how the drill handles 1mm sheet steel. I made several test holes and the drill coped with this task effortlessly.
But will a Chinese drill be able to drill stainless steel with the same ease? I just had an old stainless steel sink lying around, so I’ll test it on it. Here, too, everything is no problem. A couple of seconds and the hole is ready!
The drill easily coped with thin metals. Let's complicate the task and take a 5 mm thick steel plate.
I will not forget to use coolant and I will drill at low speeds. Let's see the result.
First of all, stepped drills are designed for drilling holes in sheet metal up to 5 mm thick and, as you can see, they coped with their main function. But I won't stop there! I became very interested (I think you too), and can these drills make a hole in cast iron? In my scrap metal deposits, I found a piece from a cast iron stove for a furnace, 10 mm thick. Let's try!
Of course, I had to tinker, but the drill coped with this task and I will say more that it was not so difficult to make a hole in cast iron. Most of all, I am glad that after all the tests, the drill remained quite alive.
And so, I can say that these step drills are pretty good and if drilled correctly: use coolant, do not put much pressure on the drill and do not cut in high speed, then they will serve you completely will pay off.
