Made the simplest multi-tool from two bolts and a spring
Today I will show you how you can make a multi-tool from ordinary bolts and springs. The idea of this interesting homemade product caught my eye on an American channel. I decided to make a similar multi-tool, but using available and cheap materials.
For this homemade product, I bought several black M8 bolts with a length of 50 mm with a strength class of 10.9 (as you know, bolts come in different strength classes from 3.6 to 12.9). In a regular hardware store, you most likely will not find them on sale, but in any auto parts store they are always available.
Also, in the same auto parts store, I bought a spring (also black) with an outer diameter of 10 mm and a length of 40 mm.
The first thing I did was cut off the bolt heads with a grinder.
Then, holding the drill in a vice and installing the petal disc on the grinder, he removed part of the thread from the bolts (about 10 mm). This is so that the bolts are not completely screwed into the spring and it can stretch.
After that, he started making nozzles (forming working parts from the smooth side of the bolts). To make the first nozzle, in a similar way, I clamped the bolt into a drill and sharpened it with a grinder.
To make the second nozzle, I needed a grinding machine. I used it to flatten the bolt and sharpen it at approximately a 45 degree angle.
Next, it was necessary to harden the working surfaces of the nozzles. Using a gas burner, he heated the metal and lowered the working part into water for a few seconds. Then he pulled out the nozzle, waiting for it to warm up again, and only then again let the workpiece go into the water, but completely.
When the nozzles were ready, he took the spring and bit off its hooks with pliers so that they did not interfere.
At the end, it remains to screw the nozzles into the spring, after having lubricated the bolt threads with oil.
Thus, I got the simplest spring multi-tool. On the one hand, a spring center punch, with which you can mark in metal or sink small nails, and on the other, a small chisel for soft metals. The functionality of this tool can be significantly expanded by making other attachments (for example, hole punches of various diameters for leather or punches for punching holes in thin metal).
