Which is better - a separate kitchen or a kitchen-living room?
When planning a renovation, you start looking at interior design magazines, flipping through photos of stylish apartments, even when watching films, your eyes fall on the design of the rooms. And now the question arises - what to do with the kitchen? Allocate a separate room for her or combine it with the living room? I see pros and cons for both options. I will share my personal opinion with you.
In what cases will the combination of a kitchen and a living room be relevant?
- Well, firstly, in small apartments, where the combination of two small rooms will expand the space and will more often gather the family in one room.
- Secondly, this option will be more attractive to those people who do not cook too often. Because the kitchen is usually a mess and smells during cooking. Of course, the presence of a good exhaust system will smooth the situation, but it will hardly be possible to get rid of the smells completely.
- Thirdly, adherents of the European way of life will give preference to this option. Because in Western Europe and America, such layouts are usually performed.
Based on this, I will highlight several disadvantages of a kitchen combined with a living room:
- We'll have to get permission to demolish the wall from certain authorities. You will have to allocate time and money for this.
- An unpleasant surprise is the presence of unpleasant odors, such as overcooked butter and onions.
- The combined kitchen-living room assumes the constant maintenance of the kitchen area in perfect order.
- If guests come to you with an overnight stay, then the problem of odors and clutter will become more urgent. Sleeping in a combined room will not be as comfortable as in a separate one.
Of the pluses:
- The combination of the kitchen and living room expands the space, creates space, fills the room with light.
- Conveniently and quickly, you can set and remove from the table during the reception.
- If there are no other living rooms in the apartment, the possibility of privacy disappears.
- Such a layout will allow family members to be together more often and solve the problem of communication, if any.
I still stick to the standard solution - separate kitchen, living room - separate. I think it is practical and convenient. That's why:
- You can safely prepare any dish without being under the watchful eye of your household.
- Smells and mess will remain out of sight.
- In the presence of small children, it is still calmer when the door to the kitchen can be closed.
- In a separate living room, guests can be accommodated for the night, while uncleaned dishes and an early rise of the hosts will not interfere with their rest.
I personally don't see any minuses, except for the lack of space. And how pleasant it is to have intimate conversations in the evenings in a small cozy kitchen. This has its own magic.
But, as they say, how many people, so many opinions. Designers can now put together a great project, both for a separate kitchen and for a kitchen-living room. The only question is what you like.
