What is the correct width for roof eaves?
The roof erection process is very long and painstaking. It consists of several stages, each of which affects the functionality and durability of the future roof. Eaves filing is one such process.
Many people who are faced with the process of installing a roof wonder: how wide should the roof overhangs be?
To begin with, let's figure out what constitutes a roof overhang. A roof overhang is an element that protrudes outside the house. It is designed to protect the foundation and the outer sides of the walls from precipitation and other natural influences. Another function of the overhang is to give the house a "finished" look.
The building rules have generally accepted norms for the width of the overhang, which primarily depends on the roof material. The minimum overhang should be between 50 and 60 mm. However, for each type of roof, this indicator can vary:
- Asbestos-cement should protrude no more than 40-50 mm.
- The dimensions of the overhang from ceramic tiles should be no more than 60-70 mm.
- The overhang of roofing steel should be no more than 90-100 mm.
- For slate roofs, the minimum size of the rally must be at least 50 mm.
Also, if you are wondering about determining the width of the overhang, you should pay attention to the conditions in your area - natural factors, temperature conditions, climate, etc. So, for example, increasing the size of the overhang increases the cost of roofing material. But these costs may be necessary in order to increase wind, sediment and other loads. If houses of wood are being built in your region, then for wooden houses it is better to choose an increased length of the rally. This will protect the wood from moisture and cold. Do not forget about such a natural factor as icing.
In addition to the above standards, the visual component of the house should also be taken into account, which also depends on the width of the overhang. Buildings with wide overhangs figuratively increase the size of the house. Therefore, such structures look perfect on large areas and large-scale houses with an unusual design. Narrow overhangs make the house visually compact and slim. It is better to choose this design option for houses located in the city.
There are situations when the rafter system does not provide for the presence of overhangs. In these cases, an artificial increase in rafters is used using special designs - filly.
For a more accurate determination of the width of the overhang, you can study the approved standards, which are described in SNiP II.II-26-76.
