A year ago, we pasted wallpaper on the walls without priming the walls. Let's see what happened!
Today I will tell one sad story about how moments of heavy workload and lack of control can lead to trouble in the form of spoiled repairs and money thrown into the wind.
Renovation - I think I know everything about it! And usually I prefer to do it myself or under my own clear guidance. But it so happened that a year ago there were many important things, and I entrusted part of the repair work to professionals. As it turned out a little later, not entirely competent. But one of the types of work was wallpapering. Everything on everything! It would seem that what could be easier?! By the end of the work, everything looked good! But a year has passed ...
Dark spots began to appear on the wallpaper, and later I noticed detachments. The renovation was carried out in the apartment we are renting, so we noticed the shortcomings some time after they appeared. Vinyl wallpaper, heavy, not cheap. I decided not to ignore this issue. Finding out the reason, I realized that it turns out that a team of repairmen decided to do without priming the walls. This is what caused the darkening and detachment.
Therefore, I will immediately remind you - if you are going to glue wallpaper, do it right. Priming the walls is very important. Yes, they did without it before, 20 years ago, when only light paper wallpapers were used for wall decoration. They adhered well to the walls and without preliminary processing. Modern wallpaper requires a wall primer. Do not ignore it, even if the instructions for the wallpaper do not write a word about its need.
Why is it necessary to prime the walls before wallpapering?
- To improve the adhesion between the wall and the wallpaper,
- In order to bind the dust particles that remain on the wall,
- To prevent the appearance of microcracks on the walls,
- To protect the wall surface from damage during subsequent wallpaper removal,
- In order to avoid the development of mildew and mold,
- In order to hide dark spots on the walls under the ground layer and to prevent dark spots on the wallpaper,
- In order for the wallpaper to lie flat.
The primer helps to avoid many problems, protects the walls, extends the life of the wallpaper. In addition, glue is easier to apply on primed walls and is consumed more economically due to the fact that pores are filled and a moisture-repellent layer is created.
One coat of primer is not enough. The number of coats required depends on the type of wall and the primer. But the minimum is to be primed 2 times, while the time interval between passes should be minimal. After finishing the priming work, wait until the primer is completely dry, only then start gluing the wallpaper. Do it right. Do not repeat other people's mistakes!
