How to determine the quality of water from a well or well? Simple ways at home!

Once, as a child, my father told me: "You can't drink unfamiliar water!" Since then, I have followed this advice, and I recommend everyone to do it. If you have equipped a well or a well on the site, the most reliable way to ensure the quality of the water is to take samples for laboratory research. But it is not always possible to do this. The reasons may vary for everyone; the water in the well and the borehole may not be drinkable!

Well and borehole water may not be potable. It may contain chemical or biological impurities. It so happens that water is dangerous to human health. And it is better to identify this in advance, before the deterioration of health and the appearance of other negative consequences.

If it is not possible to do a laboratory analysis of water, use my advice. With their help, you will be able to understand whether it is possible to drink water, or whether it is worth using it as technical.

Organoleptic methods

1. Assessment of the appearance of water.

Fill water in a clear glass container. The water should be colorless and clear. If it has a turbidity or unusual hue, I advise you not to use it.

2. Odor assessment. It is worth determining the smell both when collecting water from a well or well, and when gradually heating up to 25, then 50 degrees, and then to a boil. The absence of odors means that the water is clean.

What smells can there be?
Hydrogen sulfide
Petroleum products
Bleach
Rot

3. Taste assessment. If the smell and appearance of the water is okay, you can try it. The water has no taste. If you feel it, do not drink it.

The water may have an obvious iron or rotten taste.
The sweet taste indicates the plaster content.
Bitter - about magnesium sulfate.
Salty - about high salt content.

I do not advise you to limit yourself only to organoleptic methods. You can do a chemical analysis of water from a well at home.

Chemical analysis of water

Determine the hardness of the water. Increased hardness indicates a high content of alkaline earth metal salts.

If plaque appears on the kettle, then the water is hard.
  • Mix water and detergent. If there is no foam, the water is hard.
  • Use water at home. If plaque appears on plumbing fixtures, dishes and kettle, then the water is hard.

Traditional methods for determining the quality of water from a well or well

  • If, after boiling water for 10-15 minutes, scale or sediment remains in the kettle, it means that there are impurities in it. A dark bloom indicates the presence of iron oxide, and yellow, an excess of calcium.
  • Fill a glass dish with water and put it away for a few days out of the way of sunlight. Water can bloom!
Traditional methods for determining water quality
  • If you add manganese to the water and the solution turns yellow, the water is not drinkable.
  • Brew yourself some hot tea, then add water from the well. Clean well water will not produce turbidity.
