The plinth is one of the most important elements of the house. It is the basement that affects the entire supporting structure of the building. During operation, this part experiences powerful loads. Performing a number of several functions, including the even distribution of the weight of the entire building over the foundation, the base structure can wear out over time.

Unlike the base of the building, the base is located above the ground surface. Accordingly, this part of the building is not at all protected from such natural factors as moisture, ultraviolet rays, wind, sudden temperature fluctuations, precipitation, freezing, etc. That is why many people try to additionally protect the surface of the base.

Why can't you plaster the basement of the house?

I will try to answer this question in as much detail as possible.

Dried plaster is very fragile. Due to precipitation and sunlight, cracks may appear on it, which can subsequently spread throughout the basement.

Of course, you can cover the plaster base with polyethylene for the first time, but the risk of cracking is still high.

In addition, the plaster of the plinth has the following disadvantages:

  1. Low strength compared to materials such as stone or tiles.
  2. Low service life compared to other types of finishes.
  3. Low level of thermal insulation.
  4. Impervious to moisture and liquid.
  5. Instability to regular cycles of freezing and thawing, slow decline in the strength and quality of the plaster.
Today there are many other alternatives for plinth finishing. I recommend giving preference to materials such as stone and tiles.

If you nevertheless decide on plaster, then I recommend paying attention to the following tips:

  1. Apply a thicker layer of plaster. It will provide good protection and a high degree of thermal insulation.
  2. Add cement base to add moisture resistance.
  3. Apply the composition in two layers. At the same time, for the final coating, it is better to use decorative plaster designed specifically for plinths.
  4. Use reinforcement. This will provide a more durable and resistant finish. Such a composition will not crack and fall off the surface of the base.
