Secrets of old houses. Amazing finds in attics.
Greetings.
The house in which I live was built in 1922, that is, it is almost 100 years old. And our family bought it in 1982.
Then I was still in school, and of course, due to my curiosity, I climbed the whole house from the basement to the attic.
A house with such a long history was certainly rich in finds. Many old things continued to be used on the farm, for example, a small old cast iron was identified as a drinker for a yard dog.
One of the old things that came with the house, and which was found in the attic, was chosen by my mother. It was an old spinning wheel of the simplest design. This is sometimes called a spinning board.
Mom grew up in the village, so she had the skills to use such a spinning wheel. And how much yarn she strained on it, how many socks, mittens, scarves she knitted... She provided for all close relatives.
Such a spinning wheel, as I learned, was made from a part of the trunk with a root. A spinning wheel blade was made from the trunk, onto which a tow was tied - combed out yarn. A bottom was made from the root, on which they sat down during work, and then a thread from yarn was pulled out and formed with one hand, and a spindle was twisted with the other, on which the thread was wound.
Such spinning wheels were often made as a gift, decorated with carvings or paintings, and served for several generations.
This spinning wheel has survived to this day.
Of the other finds, there were certainly more interesting ones for the boys. Such a find was a bayonet-knife, I don't know from which war and from which rifle, but it had a blade about 30 cm long and 3 cm wide. The handle was also metal with a small guard, on one side of which there was a ring. The handle also had overhead wood cheeks.
Due to various circumstances, this bayonet-knife was then handed over to the museum.
Another find that has lived with me since then. This is an old wooden plane. By the way, it is quite working.
But relatives, when in 1992 they were building a new house and broke the old one, which was even older than ours, they found a whole treasure in the attic: a bunch of paper money issued before 1917. But at that time, there were more pressing problems, so I don't even know what happened to this treasure.
These are the findings.
