Wooden carport - more pros than cons. We disassemble and build

click fraud protection

What sane guy doesn't like his car? There is no such. Everyone tries to equip a resting place for their pet with maximum comfort. Shelter from rain, snow and the scorching rays of the sun. Many build welded or brick garages for this, but most, as statistics show, prefer sheds. And I am one of them.

Pros and cons of wooden carports

The wooden canopy has only one significant drawback - it is less durable than, for example, a brick garage. A properly made canopy will last 10-15 years, and a garage for 20-30 or more.

Now about the pros

  • A wooden carport will cost 50-60% cheaper than a brick garage and 30-35% welded.
  • You can put a canopy on your own, without special skills and equipment. Two people will complete this work in 3-5 days.
  • The carport looks aesthetically pleasing, does not break the architectural perspective of the site and neighboring buildings.
  • The canopy is multifunctional. It can be perfectly used as a place for a barbecue or temporary parking for agricultural machinery.

The main stages of work on the construction of a canopy

1. Choosing a place where the canopy will stand. If the area of the site allows, try to take into account the wind rose in your area.

Construction process

2. Decide on the dimensions and design features. For example, for a car with a height of 2.65 meters and a hinged trunk, we make the height of the canopy 3.65. The optimal area for such a canopy is 8x6 meters. Then, when it rains with wind, the car will remain dry. If you want a higher canopy, then you will have to increase the area of the building and vice versa. Please note that the minimum distance allowed between the top edge of the vehicle and the horizontal roof rail is 0.5 meters. As you already understood, the starting point when designing a canopy will be the height of your car. And don't forget to check your dreams for the future. A little "lay", in case of buying a larger car.

3. We buy materials and "open" the construction site.

We clear the area, remove the top layer of soil. We lay the base from a layer of sand and gravel.

For supporting pillars, it is optimal to use a beam of 150x150 mm. It is necessary to deepen it into the ground by at least 70 cm. Do not forget to treat the ends with bituminous mastic.

If you have designed, for example, a gable roof (this is the most common option), then for the load-bearing roof beams we take a beam of 100x100 mm. And for inclined and intermediate rafters, it will be enough to use a 50x100 board. A wide variety of materials can be used for the canopy roof. Consider the climatic features of the area.

Do not forget to treat all wooden parts of the frame with antiseptic and water-repellent agents. This will extend their lifespan..

A few final tips

  • It is better to install a canopy on an elevated site - this will ensure a natural outflow of water. Otherwise, make drainage channels around the entire perimeter of the canopy.
  • Do not build "by eye". Make horizontal and vertical alignment exactly. If the canopy comes out crooked, then be prepared for the fact that one day it will fall. Do you need it?
  • It is good if the canopy is on the leeward side of the house, then the exhaust gases will not be able to penetrate into the bedroom or living room.
