Making a latch for a gate in the country

Greetings dear. Today we will consider a homemade metal latch for a gate or street gate. I have already met a similar latch many times. We have an equestrian club with a zoo outside the city, and there they use just such latches on the gates in summer pens, only in a simpler design. I also met these on the gates, and a friend has one on the door to the barn.

We start manufacturing. We need a metal strip 3 mm thick and 5 cm wide. On it we draw just such a figure and cut it out with a grinder.

We did it the heck. Now you need to weld a metal ring to it as shown in the photo. I am sure that you do not have the same ring, so you can use a link from a metal chain. In general, use whatever you want, as long as there is a loop.

Here's a blank you should get as a result. The weld seam must be cleaned.

Now we need a metal strip 3 cm wide.Apply the strip to the latch as shown in the photo and make a hole for the bolt. In principle, one such strip is enough, but it is for this product that two strips are needed, the second is also attached on the other side.

We fasten two strips and the latch between them with a bolt and a nut through the hole made, you should get it as in the photo. We do not pinch the bolt, since the latch inside must be able to move freely.

We weld a 5 mm wide strip to the end of the latch, as in the photo. It serves to attach the latch to the doorway.

This is the kind of thing we got as a result. By lifting the ring, the latch tongue opens.

Let go of the ring and the tongue, under the influence of its own weight, is lowered to the closed position.

Now you need to weld the guide plate under the tongue of the latch as shown in the photo. See the next photo for the shape of the guide.

This is what the finished design of the latch looks like. In the mounting plate we drill holes for bolts or screws, depending on which surface you will install.

We attach the latch to the doorway, and install a metal rod on the door itself. The essence of the device is simple. The door closes and the rod on the door enters the lock along the rail while lifting the latch. Having passed to the stop, the rod will release the tongue and the tongue falls under the weight.

That's it, the lock is closed and in order to open it, you need to pull the metal loop.

As you can see, the device is as simple as possible. A friend's shed with tools is closed like this in the country. The latch stands inside and slams the door, and a thread is tied behind the ring, which is brought out above the door itself. Only the owner knows where this thread is to pull and open the door)))
