A simple and inexpensive way to remove cured polyurethane foam
Everyone uses polyurethane foam in repair or construction. Sometimes there are incidents when the foam gets dirty on the finish coating, doors, clothes. Fresh foam can be washed off with foam cleaners (if handy). But dried foam on, say, a laminate is a problem. But don't worry, there is a way.
Solvents will not help in this matter. Polyurethane foam is resistant to various solvents. A remedy that can be guaranteed to help is Dimexide. This is an inexpensive anti-inflammatory drug sold in pharmacies:
This tool is also used by some motorists to de-carbonize especially running engines. When added to oil in a certain proportion, the substance washes away all varnish deposits and carbon deposits. And this can save the internal combustion engine from overhaul or replacement. This is a separate topic and there are many subtleties.
But also with the destruction of polyurethane foam, Dimexide copes excellently:
We remove foam from the surface (try not to damage the coating). Next, apply Dimexide on a cotton pad (or cloth) and moisten the remaining foam. Do not use a dish sponge - Dimexide will dissolve it. We leave for 5-10 minutes. Then we erase the foam with the same cotton pad - it will easily begin to crumble and the surface will be cleaned. The foam becomes inelastic, stiff and flakes off the surface. Wear rubber gloves. Dimexide is very strongly absorbed into the skin.
Dimexide can also be used to remove foam from fabric, clothing. But there may be marks on the clothes, because foam penetrates into the fibers of the fabric.
There is one "BUT" in using this life hack. Dimexide dissolves varnish and paint surfaces. And if you treat the varnished door excessively or for a long time, the varnish will dissolve:
On such varnish surfaces, you need to soak the remaining foam with a small amount of Dimexide and no more than a couple of minutes. There are even examples when motorists cleaned the car body from traces of foam without damaging the paintwork of the body.
The process of cleaning the door frame element and fabric is shown in this video:
It shows that the varnish on the veneer is dissolving. You don't need to rub the foam hard. But such surfaces as laminate, linoleum, artificial leather - Dimexide cleans without the risk of damaging them.
