How to arrange a windowsill

Today there are several types of materials for decoration window sills. Plastic, wood, natural and artificial stone - you can choose the option that is acceptable for your window and interior design, taking into account their characteristics and properties in use. You can take into account your material capabilities, taste and personal preferences.

Plastic

A plastic window sill is the standard and most popular option. Today almost all windows are plastic insulated glass units. Most often, such windows are decorated with window sills from the same material.

These structures have good thermal insulation properties, do not rot, do not decompose, are resistant to sunlight and are completely waterproof. And outwardly, especially if you do not look closely, plastic models differ little from more expensive options. The plastic is covered with a laminated film, so you can find window sills of different colors - white, marbled, granite, wood, malachite, etc.

window sills made of plastic, you need to make sure that they comply with GOST and have a state certificate of compliance with sanitary and epidemiological standards. Plastic window sills are impervious to moisture and germs, therefore they are great for rooms with high humidity.

Today, manufacturers have learned to deal with such a lack of plastic as the appearance of yellowness under the influence of sunlight. Special protective coatings protect the plastic from UV radiation and it does not turn yellow.

Plastic window sills are easy to clean - just wipe them down as needed with water and a chlorine-free cleaning agent.

A natural stone

The natural qualities of the stone - strength, resistance to moisture and durability make window sills made of this material not only beautiful, but also functional.

The stone does not need special protective coatings; its care is quite simple.
Window sills are most often made of marble and granite. Granite is a particularly durable material, resistant to mechanical and temperature influences. It is used in both interior and exterior decoration.
Window sill made of granite will not be affected by water, hot or cold temperature. Granite will not be scratched by objects that are placed on the windowsill - ceramic pots, vases, etc.

Marble is a more fragile material and the choice in favor of it is made more often because of its decorative properties. Do not put heavy metal objects, hot dishes, or expose them to acids and alkalis on the marble surface.

An alternative to capricious marble can be an agglomerate window sill, which consists of about 90% marble, quartz sand or granite, and 10% polyester resin. This material is stronger than natural marble, is more diverse in appearance and cheaper.

Remember: the less veins the stone has, the less likely it is that your windowsill will subsequently become covered with a cobweb of cracks. True, alas, it is in the intricately intertwined veins that the very beauty of natural stone is. However, granite and marble have a worthy alternative - smoky onyx that can transmit light. By correctly organizing the illumination of such a window sill, you can get an original effect.

Wood

Wood in the interior always brings a feeling of warmth and comfort. Wooden window sills are in perfect harmony with the modern interior. For window decoration, valuable species of oak, beech, ash, cherry, maple, chestnut, mahogany are usually used. There are even simpler products - from pine or Siberian larch.

The most suitable type of wood for windowsills is oak. Oak is durable, tolerates moisture, condensation and temperature changes well. The oak texture is very beautiful and will adorn any interior. Coloring oak window sills can be from light yellow to dark brown. Oak does not deform when heated and this is also the reason for its popularity.

Wood intended for the manufacture of window sills must undergo drying, polishing and processing with mastic made from natural vegetable oils and wax. But, despite even such a serious processing, wood remains a very capricious material. Such window sills must not be strongly moistened with water, cleaned with abrasive agents, solvents, and not less than once every 3 years you will have to apply an additional layer of varnish, paint or wax.

It should be noted that the window sill does not just carry an aesthetic load. As a technical element of the window system, it prevents the penetration of cold into the room from the outside and, conversely, the leakage of heat from the inside. In addition, all housewives know that the window sill greatly facilitates the process of "maintenance" of the window: you can get up on it when you wash the glass, open the transom, and hang the curtains. Well, for designers, the most important property of a window sill is its ability to hide the difference between thickness of the wall and window frame and organize a spectacular transition from the inner space to the outer the world. That is why the closest attention is always paid to the material from which the windowsill is made.

Any designer will tell you that choosing a beautiful window sill is only half the battle. In order to become a full-fledged element of the interior, the window sill must somehow be used. Even if you are just going to store some things or indoor flowers on it, you need to arrange it accordingly.

The simplest metamorphosis of a window sill that immediately comes to mind is its transformation into a table. This technique is especially relevant if you expand the window sill to the size of a real countertop. In this case, under it you can equip all sorts of shelves for storing food supplies.

Such a table can be made both fixed and folding. In the latter case, a wooden bar is fixed under the window sill, and a tabletop is hung on hinges to it. For greater stability of the whole structure, it is necessary to attach legs to such a tabletop (also folding or screwed along the thread). But it should be painted to match the color of the walls or wallpaperso that when folded it is not conspicuous.

If you own a bay window, you can install shelves under the windowsill around the perimeter and fill them with books or exhibits from a private collection. In the area of such a window sill, you can arrange an alcove: put a bed almost close to the window, and make a box for storing linen and intimate accessories directly under the window sill. If you do not plant flowers, and you do not want to sleep and eat near the window itself, give up the window sill to your pet.
