Following a recent article about replacing the corrugation with a pipein the siphon under the sink, they decided not a little that if you remove the corrugation, it will disappear odor trap, i.ea water plug that prevents odor from entering the room from the sewer. Using the siphon as an example, I decided to show where and how a water seal is created, whether the corrugation is so important and whether the sewage system will stink in its absence.

I'll start by saying siphon design by her own provides a water seal or hydraulic lock. But if under the sink there is a corrugation without a siphon, then the water plug will have to be done right on the corrugation itself, bending it downward in an arc and fixing it in this position. However, when there is a siphon, then the corrugation can be left alone or even replaced with a straight pipe.

I will also pay attention to the design of the siphon to make it easier to understand how is a water seal formed. Usually there is a siphon in the siphon, where there is always water, the level of which reaches the lower edge of the drain hole, which is on the side and where the corrugation is connected. From the very bottom of the siphon to the drain hole, the height of the water column is about 7-10 cm.

Inside the flask there is cast pipe with body, through which water enters the siphon from the sink; it ends at a height of 3-4 cm from the bottom of the flask. It turns out that with a filled siphon, the end of the pipe is immersed in water by 3-5 cm. Air from the sewer can only get to the room through this pipe, but since it is always blocked by water in the flask - a water seal - it will not come out.

The smell will go if the water in the flask dries up or its level falls below the end of the inner pipe, which happens when the owners are away for a long time.

In the presence of a siphon, the corrugation ceases to be a necessity and, if desired, it can be left in any position or even replaced with smooth pipes.
