Alcohol from vodka for an antiseptic at home.
The lack of alcohol for the sanitizer in the pharmacy is not a problem. You can try making alcohol from vodka at home. I wanted to get about 150 ml of alcohol from a half-liter bottle of vodka for antiseptic, but until it came to an end, there was a little waste for samples, in the end I decided to stop at 100 ml to be sure that it came out strong. To implement the idea, I built a simple distillation.
There was no alcohol meter at hand and could not be found, so I checked the alcohol for quality by burning.
For efficiency, I poured vodka from a tall bottle into a low "pot-bellied" bottle and put it to bask in a bowl of water on the stove. In an ordinary plastic bottle cap with mineral water, I made a hole under dropper tube (70cm or more) and tightly inserted, then secured a little more around with electrical tape. Here, it is desirable that everything be tight and alcohol vapors go only into the tube.
The tube can also be taken from the construction hydraulic level, only it is thicker. It is better not to top up the bottle to the top, the vodka will increase in volume, flow into the tube and this will ruin everything.
He lowered the other end of the tube into a smaller bottle, which he placed below, also passing the end through the same cap. Only I did not screw the lid tightly so that air could escape from the bottle.
I put the middle of the tube in a smaller bowl of cold water and pressed it down with a magnet, which turned out very conveniently. This provided the condensation of alcohol. You just need to make sure that the pipe does not melt on fire, as I did in the first attempt. Then he pushed the bowl away from the fire to secure the pipe.
When the water in the bowl with the magnet warmed up along the way, it had to be replaced with cold water.
First, water boiled, then vodka, and only after that, the movement of alcohol vapor and its condensation began through the tube.
Since the vapor tube heated up and could release some undesirable substances, I would not recommend trying such alcohol, but for external use as part of antiseptic for handshe will definitely go.
As the alcohol evaporated and condensed in a 0.2 liter bottle, I checked the product for flammability several times. Almost all burned out, only a contour of water remained at the edges, as on picture 5. I think it turned out to be 70-80% in strength, which is how much is needed to prepare a normal antiseptic.
When 100 ml dripped, I decided not to continue the distillation anymore, so as not to drive away water vapor. Once again I checked for combustion and again there was order. So now it remains to add a little hydrogen peroxide and a couple of drops of glycerin to the alcohol for a moisturizing effect, loosen up and use for a few more weeks.
The first portion of sanitizer from 100 grams of alcohol was enough for almost a month. This time he took the cheapest vodka, which turned out to be a little more expensive than buying medical alcohol. Glycerin and peroxide were still in stock.
Even in terms of smell, the distillation product is real alcohol, so the result came out quite good. It took about an hour and a half to drive. What do you think?
