In February 2017, the son and daughter-in-law received the keys to the apartment. T. Since several months passed from the registration of the mortgage to the commissioning of the house, they had time to think about the interior. My children are creative, so there was no doubt that it would be a "loft". If they had no doubts about the interior, then I also had no doubts that I would make the interior elements.
Making a dining table from... old barn board
The selection of furniture for a new apartment always causes difficulties for new settlers. What to sit on, what to sleep on, what to dine on? Sometimes it comes to panic. There is a very large selection in furniture stores. And it's not surprising that young people can get confused at times. But not in our case. The style is defined - loft and rustic. And my first product (let's call it that) was a dining table.
It was decided to make the tabletop from a barn board. The selection of material for the countertop did not cause any difficulties - on the site I have an old barn, which will be "100 years old on Saturday." I got this shed together with the plot, as the only real estate on it.
How the boards were mined
The operation of removing the barn board from the barn did not seem so easy. It turned out that only the gate can be torn off the barn on the countertop. On them, the board was 45 mm thick and 130 to 240 mm wide. Moreover, the dimensions of the gate were 2000x2400 mm (1200 mm per collar). The size of the tabletop was determined as 800x1800 mm. It would seem that such gates can be used to make 3 tables. But no, the boards on the gate were crooked. If the curvature of the so-called "bow" can somehow be corrected, then the "propeller" cannot be ignored. As a result, I somehow collected material on one tabletop.
All interested parties participated in the gate disassembly process.
But here the gate was dismantled along the planks, which were brought into the house on the second floor. They stayed there for 2 months. This is done on purpose to equalize the humidity, since the table will stand in the apartment.
Board processing, life hack for imitation of "noble-gray", legs, assembly
After 2 months of drying, the boards were brought to the workshop, marked, cut and slightly processed there. The essence of this whole project was to preserve the barn board as carefully as possible in its original form - baked by the sun, shed by rain and snow, frozen by the winter cold.
To slightly even out the curvature of the boards, I had to pass them slightly through a thickness gauge. Planed stripes appeared on the edges of the boards. But then we will cover them with homemade stain.
I found an easy way to match the color of the street board. I scooped out the ash from the fireplace and dissolved it in water to a mushy state. Then I applied this gruel to bright places. After drying, the color became almost indistinguishable.
I also tried to preserve all artifacts and natural phenomena on the surface of the future countertop.
Then it was the turn of the legs. In terms of style and design, the children and I decided on the legs. These will be rectangles welded from a 40x80 mm profile pipe. Painted black after welding.
After all procedures, the table was taken in parts to the apartment and assembled.
The panel on the wall is made of the same boards - the daughter-in-law came up with it, I did it.
Estimate
And now it's time to talk about the materials. When choosing, I was not really looking for everything I needed. For several years I just like one of the St. Petersburg building hypermarkets. As you can imagine, I found boards on the countertop in my garden. And all the rest at once bought in Leroy.
