DIY instructions for making and assembling sliding gates

When one building and landscaping season ends, preparations begin for the next. For those who have just started to "raise virgin soil" and are thinking about the future of the fence, FORUMHOUSE offers an interesting story idea from one of the users. DmitryYAD shares his experience in building a wooden fence.

Carriage manufacturing

I want to say right away that I am not a professional welder or locksmith. I think that anyone can make such a gate, and so that you do not need to spend a lot of time looking for information, I will try to describe everything in detail. So, I need a gate: wing length - 4 meters, height - 1.8 meters.

Carriages: I bought 2 metal plates 8 mm thick in one metalworking office. I cut everything with a grinder and in a vice. Blank dimensions: 180 × 115 × 60 mm.

Next, I drilled holes (this took the most time and effort) with a diameter of 17 mm. From a corner of 75 mm (purchased in the same place) I cut out support brackets 55 × 50 × 100 mm.

Hairpin, 19 mm in diameter, bought in Castorama - 200 ₽; cut off at 48 mm and turned to 17 mm in diameter. Bearings, 303 dimensions: 47 mm outer, 17 mm inner - 80 rubles each.

Base plate size 120 × 250 mm. Since my site has a height difference, later I made adjusting plates. Initially, I planned to use a 60 × 60 × 4 mm pipe and made 4 bearings in carriages. The task was complicated by the fact that the guide rail was 5.9 m and I had to transport it to the village 120 km away by car. As planned, I have to cut it in half and weld it on the spot, but I need to make a prototype. I did not find such a pipe, but I found 60 × 60 × 3 mm - but in this case the inner size is 60-3-3 = 54 mm, and the bearing is 47 mm, 7 mm of clearance is a lot. Therefore, I put 2 compensating bearings on one carriage, and left the other unchanged.

The cost of the carriages is 1500 rubles per pair. If you need to clarify something, write in the comments, I will add it.

Guide

The prototype turned out. The carriages moved well, even at the weld. I bought a pipe at a metal warehouse, it cost 1,800 rubles for 6 meters. I cut it and took it to the village. Welding - I cleaned the cut point of each segment at an angle of 45 degrees by 1-1.5 mm, clamped it with two clamps diagonally through the corners. I welded 1-2 cm each, turned it over and again 1-2 cm each in order to prevent the metal from overheating.

Cutting width - 18 mm. First, I drew a white marker along the entire length. We just don't cut it by eye! I used a piece of an even plate: I clamped it with clamps and along it, like a guide, I led it with a grinder. For a long time, but exactly. The entire cut took 2 hours and 10 cut-off wheels. The whole system cost 3500 rubles.

By the way, about the hairpin from Castorama. I showed this post to my friends with a technical background. I was told that it is better to use bolts instead of this stud, with a strength factor of 8.8. Take note.

Installation of support channel

I bought a channel with a width of 200 mm at a metal warehouse, gave 2000 ₽ for 2 meters. From the inside I welded 2 support pipes with a diameter of 75 mm and a length of 1200 mm. The pillar was also welded to the channel, thereby obtaining a single foundation on three supports.

After marking on the ground, he began to dig a hole for the foundation. Pit size 2000 × 400 mm. As I wrote earlier, the entire area is red clay. I dug all day, I remembered all the obscene words. Filling with mortar using the same technology as the fence posts: first crushed stone, then a very liquid solution. Immediately flooded about a quarter of the depth and left for a week. All week I was consumed by doubts about the correctness of the foundation. The next Saturday I decided to add an armature. I cut off the reinforcement, with a diameter of 10 mm, in pieces of 400 mm and beat directly into the clay by 250 mm. Welded to the pipe, thereby increasing the area of resistance of the foundation. On the same day, he poured the solution to ground level. And on Sunday I finished with the foundation. I poured about 250 liters of the solution in total, I did not count the rubble, but I think the same amount went.

Gate frame

I bought a pipe, 50 × 50 × 2 mm, 3 pieces for 900 rubles, plus, I also had 3 meters - it was not enough. Therefore, my gate has only 1 diagonal brace. Now I'm watching the deformation - everything seems to be ok, but still, I'll put another one.

The whole frame took half a day. T. Since the metal is thin, take an electrode of 3 mm and set the current to a lower value.

Gate assembly

It's time to "marry" the system with the frame.

I grabbed the carriages by welding at three points. Carriage with compensating and bearings - on the right. With the help of his wife, daughter and 2 clamps, the frame was put into place.

I welded in sections of 100 mm, then the interval is 300-500 mm, this is also from overheating and deformation. They painted the primer-enamel on rust - thanks to my daughter (I hate painting myself)!

Upper rollers

It turned out to be more difficult with them, since I did not find anything on sale. I walked around all the shops, but there is nothing suitable for sale. As a bracket, I took a 50 mm corner and a 16 mm hairpin, instead of rollers - wheels from a shopping cart.

I wanted to put the same wheels inside, but the wheel size is 145 mm and the distance between the post and the gate is too large. I had to put the same bearing 303.

Receivers, support roller

The upper and lower receiver - bent 2 mm from a piece of metal (it is better to make it from 3 mm) and scalded. I glued in polyurethane for shock absorption.

The support roller was made of 203 bearings (303 is possible).

Elapsed time, estimate

Actually, that's all. There is no point in describing the adjustment process, since it will be different for everyone. Now the exact numbers. First, how much time was spent on this or that node (7-8 hours working day), then, how many rubles.

  • Carriages - 2 days, 1500 ₽.
  • Guide - 0.5, 2000 ₽
  • Foundation (together with metal) - 2.5, 3000 ₽
  • Goal frame - 1, 3000 ₽.
  • Gate boards (with painting) - 1, 2000 ₽.
  • Adjustment - 1 day, 0 ₽.

Round up to 12,000 ₽ and 8 days of work.

P. S. The cost of a gate in our region is about 50,000 rubles. This results in multiple savings. Try, do - I'm sure you will succeed! All the best!
