How to protect the "iron horse": making a carport

Many summer residents get to their homes or dachas outside the city by their own car, and not by public transport. In this case, you have to organize a parking space for the car. Building a garage is not always convenient for various reasons - for example, financial. It is much easier to assemble a carport with your own hands. Before starting work, a design and materials are selected, in particular, the question of what to make a roof is considered.

What is a canopy for?

Some owners of suburban real estate sometimes leave their car in the open. But very soon the owners come to the conclusion that a canopy is still needed. The impact of the environment on the car is devastating. And although this does not manifest itself at once, gradually the vehicle will need to be repaired. The canopy will protect the car from the following adverse factors:

• Precipitation. Snow and rain over time will lead to the development of corrosion on metal surfaces.

• Grada. Even the smallest hail can dent the bonnet and roof.
• Mud. Dust will start to accumulate around the perimeter of the glass. And birds can leave a "surprise" on the car.
• Sun rays. Exposure to UV light can fade seat paint, which is especially common in summer. In addition, the tire material will lose its original properties more quickly if there is no canopy.

The canopy protects the vehicle from many adverse external influences. The car will not stay in the sun, rain, hail and snow.

Designs and dimensions

When choosing a carport, you need to decide on its design. These are the roof and frame. Elements are made from different materials. When choosing the size and design of the canopy, the size of the car and the area is taken into account. Sheds are as follows:

• One of the walls of the house or outbuilding serves as a support. This is convenient if there is enough free space next to the building. In this case, you will need two supports, on which the roof rests only in front. It is more aesthetic when the canopy material is in harmony with the facade and roof finish.
• Stand-alone design. The canopy is mounted on supports, not adjacent to other buildings. It can be built in any suitable place on the site.

There are designs for one or more machines. They can have 2 or more supports. The roof is straight, inclined, gable or semicircular.

Before starting construction, a plan for the shed is created. Each element is worked out, the exact dimensions are indicated. For a car, the average size of the canopy is 5x2.5 m.If the plot is large and the owners have a minibus or SUV, you can build a structure measuring 6.6x3.5 m.If you need to make a canopy for 2 cars, you can install a structure 6.3x6 m.

An important parameter is the height of the canopy, which depends on the dimensions of the machine. The height of the vehicle with a loaded roof rack (if any) must be taken into account. The average size is 2-2.5 m.If the building is lower, it will be inconvenient. And rain falls under too high a canopy.

As a standard, the structure should be 1 m longer than the car and 1.5-2 m wider. If a canopy is being built for 2 cars, add up their width and add one meter on each side and provide for a distance of 80 cm between them. The length between spans does not exceed 2 m.

Frame materials

A carport for a summer cottage is built from light but durable materials. It is taken into account what tools the master has. For the construction of the frame, the following materials are often used:

• wood;
• metal;
• stone or brick;
• concrete.

Quite often, supporting structures are built of wood. The wood is distinguished by a certain ease of processing, it looks beautiful, in harmony with the landscape design of the summer cottage. Supports are built from a 15x15 cm bar or logs with a diameter of 15 cm. The frame is assembled from beams and boards. The erection of the structure will not take much time. It will be strong, practical and durable, subject to special treatment - protective compounds.

The disadvantage of a wooden canopy is its ability to ignite. Without proper processing, the material is susceptible to rotting, insect attacks. Therefore, the supports must be treated with fire retardants, antiseptic, varnished or painted. Some universal biocidal impregnations are colored to avoid additional staining. But more often the frame is nevertheless painted with paintwork, and some are also pre-brushed, it looks impressive.

Reliable, strong supports are built from metal, resistant to impacts and high loads. To do this, use a metal profile 8x8 cm, forged elements, pipes with a diameter of 10 cm. The connections are made by welding or bolts. The metal frame requires the use of a special tool, so installation will require more effort and skill from the master.

Metal structures are regularly coated with protective compounds so that they do not rust. This work is done about once a year.

Supports can be built from brick, stone. The master must have the skills of a builder and use the appropriate tools in the work. But most summer residents have versatile skills and an arsenal of all kinds of hand and power tools. The load-bearing elements, built of bricks and stones, look beautiful, they are combined with the facade of a house built from the same materials. Solid supports are obtained that are not subject to external influences.

The concrete supports are stable and can support the weight of almost any roofing material. They take longer to build. The concrete solution gains strength under certain conditions. It shouldn't dry out too quickly, so it will take days to build the supports. But their service life is several decades.

In practice, a canopy (with your own hands) is easier to build from wood or metal.

Roof types

It is important to choose the right roofing materials so that the carport is practical and beautiful. Most often, the structure is covered with the following materials:

• polycarbonate;
• metal tiles;
• professional flooring;
• awning.

When choosing a material, take into account what kind of roof the house has. It is desirable that the roof of the structures is made of the same materials (if possible). Then the canopy will not look like an element torn out of the overall picture.

Soft materials, such as ondulin or roofing felt, can only be used if a continuous sheathing is created. Therefore, rigid sheets such as polycarbonate and metal tiles are more suitable for creating a carport.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a practical and aesthetic material that is easy to install and can be used on any support. The polycarbonate canopy can have a flat or domed roof. The material is flexible, does not burn (melt) and is not afraid of impacts. Usually, cellular polycarbonate is chosen for the canopy.

You can choose a suitable shade of material. Polycarbonate does not fade over time, does not rust, is not afraid of moisture and temperature changes. When heated, the sheets can expand, so installation must be carried out taking this property into account.

Metal tile

This material is made from sheet metal. It has an average weight, so it is better to make a capital foundation. Metal tiles are often chosen if, according to the idea, a canopy is attached to a house, the roof of which is made of the same material. The frame is also built from metal. The result is a canopy, closed on one side by the wall of a building or an outbuilding.

The metal tile tolerates mechanical damage and shock well, covered with a protective layer. The material looks beautiful, combined with different facade styles.

Corrugated board

It is a practical and lightweight material that is also easy to install. This is a sheet that has undergone pressure processing on a rolling machine. To increase durability, galvanized or polymer coating is applied to its surface. Profiled sheeting with a polymer coating looks advantageous.

Such material can be mounted on almost any frame. The material is resistant to various adverse external influences, and the canopy looks airy and neat. The corrugated board is considered to be fireproof, and does not require the use of expensive equipment during installation.

The material is resistant to ultraviolet radiation, does not lose its brightness over a long service life. Profiled sheets are distinguished by good resistance to both wind loads and precipitation, so it can be mounted in areas where strong winds are frequent or heavy snow falls in winter.

There are different types of corrugated board on sale. They differ in stiffness, wave height and application. Roofing sheeting is well suited for arranging a canopy. The optimum sheet thickness is 0.7 mm. The higher the wave height, the stiffer the sheet. This indicator is key if corrugated board is chosen for a large canopy.

Awning

One of the simplest roofing decking options is to use an awning. This material is lightweight, resistant to adverse weather conditions. If necessary, the awning is dismantled. In this case, the shed is usually equipped only upon the arrival of the owners at the dacha. If the owners are rarely here, then this is an effective way to protect the vehicle without high costs. Before leaving, the awning is simply removed from the frame.

For the manufacture of such a canopy, polymer materials are used. The awning turns out to be quite dense and tough, resistant to medium wind load. The material is mounted on a metal frame.

You can choose any awning design that will go well with the main structure and landscape design. If necessary, the material is changed, which does not take much time and effort. The standard awning life is 5 years. The indicator depends on the conditions in which the awning is used, how often it is pulled over the frame and dismantled.

With the help of an awning, it is easy to make a canopy, closed from 3 or even 4 sides. It looks like a tent, so it reliably protects the car. This is quite enough so that the car is not covered with dust and dirt, it was closed from bad weather and the scorching sun.

Mobile awnings

This is one of the types of awning awnings. This is a ready-made structure, which includes all the necessary elements for installation. The parts are folded like a designer according to the scheme provided by the manufacturer in the instructions. Such a canopy is mounted in a couple of hours by the forces of one or two people.

They take a mobile shed with them not only to the dacha, but also when going out into the countryside. The structure can only consist of a roof or have walls made of soft material. Sometimes polymer panels are included instead of fabric. But the awning is more practical, because the material is easy to remove, fold for storage. It is lighter and takes up little space.

A mobile carport will be a good place to park your car during the warmer months. If the owners come to the dacha in winter, it is better to build a stationary structure that can protect the car from snow and other adverse natural conditions.
