Why Boston's tallest skyscraper was the worst
Dear readers, in this article I will tell you about an interesting architectural site in Boston. Namely, about a very famous skyscraper called Hancock Tower. What's so interesting about it? It is distinguished from other skyscrapers in America and Boston, in particular, by the contradictions that have accompanied the high-rise from the very beginning of construction.
To begin with, this is Boston's tallest skyscraper. In the construction of the John Hancock Tower, the architects embodied their new original ideas. They decided to build the building in the form of a rhombus, not a rectangle, as was done before.
Another innovation was the decision to completely glaze the facades of the building. And, of course, a bet was made on the height. Cool ideas, started building. But something went wrong already in the early stages. Construction was delayed by as much as five years, but nevertheless a chic skyscraper was erected.
Only the residents of this city were not particularly happy about such an event, as it seems to me. After all, at first the building swayed from the wind, there was a threat of collapse. Even during strong winds, the nearest streets were blocked to avoid casualties. The problem was soon resolved. But the glass fell from the facade. The building was crumbling before our eyes.
And one day there was a storm in Boston. Needless to say, all the glasses fell off completely. Then the skyscraper was temporarily sheathed with plywood. Everyone started calling it a plywood skyscraper. Bostonians considered it a failure. Still, the skyscraper was restored, it again reflects the sky in its facades. No one is afraid to walk alongside, even in windy weather.
The cause of all these incidents was found out for a long time and thoroughly, but no definite answer was expressed. There were many different options. I think that there were mistakes in the glass fixing, because no one had done such a volume before. Also, the problem was in the miscalculations of laying the foundation.
It was just that at that time such construction was an experiment. It is clear that architects and builders could be wrong. Fortunately, all the shortcomings have been identified, studied and eliminated. The architects and the building itself were even awarded prizes.
