White houses under the scorching sun of Andalusia: how to live in the town of Mijas

If you are lucky enough to be on the Costa del Sol in Spain, break away from the beach and sea for a day to travel to Mijas. This town is only 30 kilometers from Malaga, and the coastal resorts of Fuengirola and Torremolinos are even closer.

By the way, Mijas itself has a beach: after the tourist boom that swept Spain in the 1950s, the city partially "slipped" down to the sea. But here I want to tell you about its old district, Mijas Pueblo, which is adhered to a mountain cornice like a swallow's nest.

This ancient city, founded by the Phoenicians in ancient times. The Romans, but even more Saracens, who ruled Andalusia until 1487, left their mark on the streets of Mijas. The inhabitants of the city deliberately did not settle by the sea, although they fed on it - after all, until the 18th century there was a threat of pirate attacks. But not only fishermen were forced to overcome the distance to the sea, going down steep steeps. All other residents also moved around the city, almost like rock climbers.

A huge gap in the mountain divides Mijas Pueblo in two. A rapid stream flows along its bottom. This area is occupied by a garden, where something blooms at any time of the year.

All houses in Mijas are dazzling white. This keeps the walls from getting hot from the southern sun. Each house has a patio - a shady courtyard where a fountain almost always gurgles. The favorite decoration of such white houses is "azulejo" - painted ceramic tiles. They laid out facades, benches and even serial numbers of houses.

The streets in Mijas are incredible steep. Many of them are narrow staircases.

Therefore, public transport in Mijas is special. In the "taxi company" of the city there are 62 donkeys - 49 saddled, and 13 draft ones, with carts.

Mijas is now one of the most "promoted" sights of Andalusia. Still: in the world of similar coastal hotels and villas, a small white town serves as the only reminder of how this region looked in ancient times.
