Why there is no central heating in China

Many Russians, going on a trip to China in winter, are surprised, discouraged, and not at all ready for the fact that there is no central heating in China at all. Russian people, it seems, are accustomed to cold and snowy winters, should calmly endure any winter weather conditions, especially in a country whose climate is much milder than in our homeland.

The climatic norm of air temperature for the average winter month (January) in the European part of Russia is about –19 degrees. along C, and in the Far East it reaches - 23 gr. while in China the average air temperature in the central part of the country in January is -7 degrees. on C, and in the northern regions -11 gr. But despite this fact, the Russians who came to China in the winter are constantly freezing, which darkens their journey, while the Chinese in this position seem to feel wonderful!

Why it happens? It seems to me, first of all, the feeling of a comfortable temperature for life is provided not by the country's climate and the air temperature in the fresh air, but by its degree inside the premises. I concluded that people in Russia feel perfectly comfortable even in the coldest winter months thanks to our central heating system. The heating season in our country in some cities can begin from late September to early October and lasts until the end of April or early May. This greatly simplifies our life, but we especially notice this when we get to where the situation is completely different, for example, as in China.

There is indeed no central heating in the PRC practically throughout the country, with the exception of northern cities, for example, such as Beijing or Harbin. There, in buildings, we can see batteries that resemble those in our apartments. But already in more southern cities such as Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, etc. in the winter months people cope on their own. For this, the installation of underfloor heating is common in China, there is a large selection of heating devices. Most of the population installs individual gas boilers. It certainly helps in heating your own home, but in public places: museums, restaurants, cinema, theater, in some hotels it is always very cold.

If someone likes to watch Chinese films, they probably paid attention to the steam coming from the mouths of the actors even indoors, if the film was filmed in the fall or winter. And in the off-screen scenes, you can see how the actors are wrapped in large warm jackets or blankets. So for filmmakers, the lack of heating becomes an additional concern.

It would be wrong to say that there is no heating in China at all, since the country's heating system is still available, but it is very different from ours. First of all, the fact that China is heated with coal-fired boilers, that is, boilers operating on coal raw materials. For this reason, the northern part of China is much more polluted, with smog in the air in winter.

Are there any advantages to not having a heating system in China? Of course, there is, this is a big saving of the country's energy resources, as well as the personal savings of people living in southern cities, as they save on utilities. But for us, people already accustomed to heating, this situation becomes a whole test. What do you think about that? Has anyone been to China in winter?
