How to level an old wood floor with plywood

click fraud protection

Leveling an old wooden floor with plywood sheets is not a complicated operation at all. Plywood is a budget material that is ideal for leveling small differences in floor height. In my case, I came up with this option - it allowed me to save money and get a perfectly flat floor.

Preparation for work

Preparation for work began with the fact that it was necessary to determine: whether to remove old boards, and what plywood to buy. First of all, I determined the floor height differences using the building level, they turned out to be relatively small, so it was decided to immediately lay a new coating without dismantling old. As you can see in the photo, the floor is in good condition.

The choice was made in favor of 6 mm thick plywood. For a room of 13 sq. m. it took 5 sheets, which cost me 1,000. 75 rubles, so the price for a sheet measuring 1525x1525 mm was 215 rubles. Materials were bought at the construction site, because prices are comparatively cheaper there than in specialized stores.

Plywood floor leveling process

Leveling the floor took me 1 day, no difficulties in the process of work were identified. Next, I will describe the detailed instructions for alignment:

1. The first step was to prepare the base, the old skirting boards were removed and the protruding nails hammered in.

2. Then the floor was thoroughly washed and cleaned of debris.

3. Next, the plywood sheets were marked and cut with a jigsaw. Since the plywood is not sanded, small chips and burrs formed at the edges during the sawing process, I sanded the ends using fine-grained sandpaper.

4. The first sheet was laid with small indents from the wall, about 1.5 cm, later they were foamed.

5. Further, the sheets are stacked with a small gap between themselves. They can be sealed with parquet sealant followed by sanding.

6. The sheets were fastened to the floor using wood screws 3.5x25 mm with a pitch of 10-15 cm.

Tips for choosing plywood

A few tips for choosing plywood for leveling your wood floor:

· To reduce the cost of work, I advise you to buy materials at the construction base. There are almost always discounts for plywood and chipboard.

· Choose plywood with a high degree of water resistance: FSF or FC.

· If you decide to lay on an old base and there are no strong differences in height, then you can take plywood with a thickness of 4 to 8 mm.

· If the coating is rough (under linoleum), I recommend purchasing grade I (AB) or II (B) sheets. Such plywood has a minimum number of defects.

What do you think about leveling the floor with plywood sheets, is it a good idea, write in the comments.
