Today I am writing about another refutation of one of the life hacks, which has become insanely popular in Zen. This is about cleaning sinks, bathtubs and toilets with vegetable oil.

Once upon a time, someone wrote about the fact that he poured sunflower oil into the sink when they left for a long time. Such useful advice supposedly prevented the appearance of a smell in the whole house from the fact that during a long the lack of a home of the owners and not using water, the water in the riser dried out and began to flow from the sewer fetid odor.

But some unscrupulous authors either from the fact that they inattentively read the advice, or even in addition to the quantity they didn't read the views and the title, or even for the sake of the uniqueness of the topic and hype, they decided to cash in on visits to channel. But all, as one, began to produce delirium! Incredible nonsense! They started offering readers

pour vegetable oil into the sink and into the toilet for wall cleaning and even pipe cleaning.

I mentally, of course, understood that this could not be at all! Well, how can vegetable oil clean pipes or clean the surfaces of sinks, bathtubs and even toilet bowls with a napkin with vegetable oil? I thought, maybe I lagged behind modern people? After all, we drink Coca-Cola, and people also clean toilets for them?

You know, when you read such nonsense, you start to think about it and even check. But this time I didn't want to check on my plumber. It was enough for me to learn from a neighbor about her experiment with her own plumbing and how it all ended ...

Then I still got to the original article with the original meaning - protection against odor from the sewer. So I decided to take advantage of the fact that the neighbor had to call a plumber because of the experiment (the sink was clogged after the oil and the water did not leave at all) and consult a specialist in this area.

I went to her apartment when the pipe cleaner thanked Galya for her experiment and earnings, which she threw him out of the blue! It turns out before that he visited the apartment on the first floor and then the situation actually worsened a general blockage in the riser, and on the first floor there was a global disaster (fortunately, I was on work). Galya is an irrepressible woman, not only has she experimented herself, she has also encouraged others to do the same.

Well, so, I asked the plumber, is it really useful at least for a rare time to pour oil into the pipes from the smell? Indeed, the smell appears and the water evaporates. And he just yelled at me:

- No need to pour oil into the sink! You turn on your brains, please, dear ladies! While the oil will stand in the riser for as long as you leave, it can also solidify there, form a thick layer of plaque on the walls, which you cannot clean on your own. Wash off such an amount, even if the vegetable oil is not easy. There will be problems all over the riser, you know? Especially in old apartments like yours, where the water pipes already have a loose coating, formed over the years from the water, there is rust, lime mixed with a greasy layer of food residues.

Even a little layer, as some advise, you can create only from the side of the sink, and in the pipe, the water will evaporate in both sides (you cannot fill the other end towards the sewer with oil), it still dries up, it has already been tested at our work!

- Well, I thought so. But at the time of a long departure, what can you advise then from the smell? I ask.

- You have nothing to plug the hole with? In the toilet, close the toilet lid by placing a layer of toilet paper between the toilet and the rim, rim and lid. So that it is like a gasket and the smell does not penetrate. There are special stoppers for sinks and baths. As a last resort, plug the sinks with a cloth, a homemade stopper... What are the problems? Come back later, first rinse the water in the toilet a couple of times, then open it. And after opening the kitchen, immediately drain the water.

They found the problem really. It's that simple!
