Apartment renovation. By ourselves or not by ourselves, that is the question ...

The types of repair work in an apartment can be divided into two large groups: rough work and finishing. At the first stage, installation (replacement) of water pipes, heating system, electrical wiring, leveling of floors, plastering and plastering of walls is carried out and only then they proceed to finishing.

The choice of material for the toilet

After we coped with the first part, the creative torment began, what material to choose for decorating the premises. After long battles, studying the properties of certain materials, it was decided that the toilet would be finished with plastic panels. The humidity here is not as high as in the bathroom, and active actions that can lead to surface damage are not expected in this room.

For reasons of economy, we did the finishing ourselves. A crate was made from a metal profile for walls and a ceiling, a duct for a sewer pipe and a duct for water pipes. A starting plastic profile was attached to the walls (to the left and right of the entrance door) at the top and left of the profile, panels were inserted into it and fastened with self-tapping screws using a screwdriver. The last panel was also fitted with a start profile. The starting profile was not fastened from below, just covered with a plinth.

In order to have access to the pipes in the event of an accident, it was decided to leave removable panels on the box, which simply slid into the starting profile and were held only by them and the baseboard. Now I would do it differently, using an angled profile, since there is a small gap left, but at that time the idea of ​​using starting profiles of the same width won out.

The choice of material for the bath

In the bathroom, due to high humidity, it was decided to hire craftsmen and lay out ceramic tiles, do not do it yourself decided, they were afraid to experiment, yet the tile is not a cheap material and in case of failure, the losses would be significant.

The ceiling is also made of plastic, like in the toilet, only the crate was made of wood. In my opinion, wood is easier to work with.

The choice of material for the ceiling

The ceiling in the kitchen and in the corridor made of PVC panels was made with a wooden crate; you can wash it at least every day using an ordinary mop or brush, without fear of damage.

Plastic panels are not expensive, strong enough, easy to assemble, so it was decided to design most of the ceilings in the apartment like this.

The ceiling in a large room was stretched, it is much cheaper than from drywall, and the plastic panels did not fit in length and with such a width of the room they are difficult to mount.

The choice of material for the floor

Again, for reasons of economy, the floor in the entire apartment is covered with linoleum. In the kitchen and in the rooms, so that the furniture does not leave marks, linoleum was chosen with a large protective layer.

In the kitchen, in the corridor and in a small room, linoleum was laid without problems, since the width of the premises is less than the width of the canvas. The material was laid out in order for it to straighten, then the excess was cut off with a clerical knife and simply secured with baseboards. No glue was used, the canvas lies flat without bubbles or swelling.

But the large room is square, side length is 4 meters 40 centimeters. Among the 5 meter options, not a single color was pleasant, they decided to buy 4 meter linoleum, they began to figure out what to do with the rest. Luckily for us, the warehouse offered a piece of the same material 50 centimeters wide and 5 meters long. Cold welding was used for the connection, it is good that the edges of the two canvases were perfectly flat and easily joined. The place of joining and the seam is practically invisible, thanks to the variegated colors, we did not have to bother much about adjusting the pattern.

In order not to buy extra material, you can put furniture in place of the seam and disguise the fact that the drawing is not joined.

The choice of material for the walls

Little natural light enters a large room, so it was decided to make it in bright colors, To visually increase the height, the wallpaper is selected with a vertical pattern and not bright vertical stripes.

The kitchen is also dark, so the wallpaper is light washable, with an implicit pattern that changes color depending on the lighting. It remains to place a decorative element on the wall (brown, ideally a picture with flowers, as on kitchen apron) to balance and tie into a single whole dark linoleum, kitchen set, light cloth and wallpaper.

Do it yourself or call the masters?

Everyone decides for himself. If you have purchased housing in a new building or are planning to change the interior in your apartment, and your budget is not limited, then you should contact a professional builders, because they have been working for more than one year and know the technology of working with all materials, they will be able to advise how best to do in one or another case.

First, they get the same job done much faster.

Secondly, in the database of any company there are many photos with the interiors of various rooms, the designers will help to combine the elements you like, creating exactly what you want, will tell you which materials are best suited for implementation ideas.

But if there is not as much money as you would like, you can do most of the work yourself, this is quite possible if you have a desire and at least a little work skills.
