Hello dear subscribers and guests of my channel! It seems that humanity has become one step closer to realizing the cherished dream - getting electricity literally out of thin air.

After all, a scientific group from the University of Massachusetts managed to create a device that uses in its natural protein construction, which contributes to the generation of electricity from moisture contained in atmospheric air.

What is this device

In the laboratory of Jun Yao and Derek Lovli, it turned out to create a device called "Air-gen", which is a pneumatic generator with electrically conductive protein nano wires produced by a microbe Geobacter.

In this case, the electric current is generated due to the interaction of natural protein and water vapor, which is necessarily present in the air.

That is, in fact, the device receives energy from the air. At the same time, the operation of the device does not depend on such conditions as: sunlight, wind, etc. And the generation is carried out non-stop, even in a closed room.

It is also specifically noted that energy generation is possible even in particularly arid regions of the earth (deserts).

How the device works

In order for the Air-Gen device to function successfully, only the thinnest 10 micron film of protein nanowires is required.

In this case, the lower part of the film rests on the electrode, while the smaller electrode, which is only partially covered by the nanofilm, is on top.

In this case, water vapor is collected from the atmospheric air, and the combination of electrical conductivity and chemical composition protein nanowires in combination with the smallest pores in the film create conditions for the generation of electric current between electrodes.

How it became possible

This device became possible thanks to the discovery of a microorganism called Geobaster in the river sediments of the Potomac River 30 years ago.

Further laboratory studies by D. Catch showed that the discovered microbe is capable of producing electrically conductive protein nanowires.

And Yao worked for a long time at Harvard University, where he worked on electronic devices with silicon nanowires.

The efforts of the two scientists were combined in order to work out the idea of creating useful electronic devices from protein nanowires produced by a microorganism. Geobaster.

But the first problem scientists faced was the lack of a microbe. As a result of the experiments, a new strain was obtained, thanks to which the production of biological nanotubes was put on stream.

Prospects of invention

After a series of successful tests, scientists are confident that their developed devices Air-Gen already now they are able to fully power small electronics and the process of preparation for commercial implementation is already in full swing.

The laboratory also plans to release a patch Air-Gen, which will already fully power devices such as: fitness bracelets, health monitors, etc.

And in the future, it is planned to develop batteries that will power cell phones and compete with graphene batteries (insert link to article).

But gadgets are not the only area where the discovery can be applied. As Yao assures, in the future, you can even create a special wall paint that will generate energy around the clock in the room.

Conclusion

The results of the research of scientists were published in a scientific journal Nature and in fact they are a revolution in the energy sector, it remains only to wait for the full introduction of new devices to the general public.
