Who and what is hiding behind closed windows in Egypt
How we rejoice when there is a large window in the room, sunlight streams through it, filling the space with warmth and comfort, a cat basking under its rays. But, what a surprise, having got to Egypt, to see closed small windows in the apartment, and even double shutters, can you imagine?
And if this is the first floor, then there is a whole sandwich:
- external wooden shutters,
- metal grill from intruders,
- frame with fine perforated insect screen,
- glass, but covered with a film that imitates painted stained-glass windows,
- tulle and dense curtain.
Of course for us this is an oddity, but there are explanations for everything.
Climate
Egypt is located in Africa, where the sun not only caresses, but burns everything around, all year round. In July in the afternoon, the temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius. From such a sun, you want to hide more reliably. Do not be surprised that getting into the house during the day here you will plunge into darkness and have to turn on the lighting.
Another reason is the location among the sands of the desert, or rather its fine dust, which swirls in the air. An especially unpleasant season is March-April, when winds rise from the deserts and create sandstorms. They can be taken by surprise, because it is almost impossible to accurately predict their attack, and if you leave open the window, then upon returning to the house there will be a surprise: the dwelling will more likely resemble an ancient tomb than a residential room.
Privacy
The Egyptians, like no one else, know that personal life is behind seven locks for others, and they do not put anything up for review. But they are also very curious, and windows closed in this way provide a life without peeping.
Noise and din
Residents of houses located, for example, in Cairo, housing clogging is essential. Due to the overcrowding of this city, the nightlife, the large number of cars, the noise lasts from early morning until three in the morning. By closing your windows tightly, you can slightly muffle the news of this city din.
Modern houses are less often equipped with shutters, using already large, sometimes view windows, but possibly with a covering from daylight and blackout curtains inside.
At first it was very unaccustomed to me to live among such things, but from time to time you get used to it, knowing and understanding the traditions and the way of local people. Could you live like this? Without the opportunity to climb onto the windowsill on a rainy day and drink hot, aromatic tea?
