Want a record harvest of Plums this year? Prune the tree on time and correctly, and then enjoy the juicy fruits

Luxurious plums annually bring me a harvest enough so that jams and compotes from it would have time to get bored over the winter. I grow the most common, time-tested varieties of it and try not to fertilize with chemistry.

There is no secret in leaving - I just got used to cutting trees on time and according to all the rules every year, which turns into their rich, delicious fruiting!

Pruning should be started in April, as soon as the average daily air temperature reaches -4 ° C and does not drop below. And it is important to have time to finish with it before the movement of juices begins.

However, if the winter was unusually harsh, an exception should be made and pruning should be postponed until the leaves bloom - in this case, it will be possible to realistically assess the damage that frost caused to the tree.

First of all, they perform sanitary pruning - branches that are broken, dead and obviously sick are subject to removal. And it is important to note right away that in order for the harvest to be good for next year, sanitary pruning must be repeated in the fall, after the sap flow has stopped.

After the sanitary one, you can choose what to remove during thinning pruning, the purpose of which is to eliminate unnecessary shoots that take away the strength of the plum.

Plus - in many old species and varieties of folk selection, shoots grow haphazardly, touch each other, rub, and because of this, the bark is damaged and "wounds" are formed.

Finally, when there are too many shoots, the crown becomes shaded and the ripening fruits do not receive nutrients normally.

In addition, if in a year the growth of an adult plum tree turned out to be less than 15 cm, then in the spring I will definitely perform anti-aging pruning. Moreover, in total, it stretches for 4 springs, during which it is necessary to completely rejuvenate the crown by removing the old wood!

But never, never cut off fruiting branches at the root - it is enough to cut 1/3 of the length.

As for the vertical branches, they are known to bear fruit much worse than inclined ones. But there is no need to rush to remove them - so you can leave a bare trunk altogether!

It is much more reasonable to change their angle of inclination by tying them to the trunk, securing them with metal brackets or hanging a load.

If there are young or old plums in the garden, then not only in April, but also until the end of May you can carry out the procedure for breaking out shoots, the youngest, those that are still barely attached to the crown wood.

Thus, you can "push" the plum, redirect its forces to the formation of ovaries and ripening of fruits.
