Do you want a record harvest of Cabbage in the new year? Learn to grow healthy seedlings properly
The key to a good harvest is high-quality seedlings. For several years now I have been growing cabbage seedlings myself, although I used to buy them. This has its advantages. Now I'll tell you which ones.
I choose seeds of the right variety
I am planting seedlings of white cabbage, medium ripening. It is suitable for both salads and pickling.
I used to try to plant early cabbage, but it gives a small harvest, so I refused it.
Planting time and method of growing cabbage
Since I live in the south of the country, I tried to plant cabbage in different ways: seedlings and planted the seeds directly into the ground. I came to the conclusion that cabbage grown by seedlings is denser and the yield is high.
In the last days of March, at the beginning of April, I make a shallow longitudinal hole, scatter the seeds and cover it with earth. On average, after 43 days, I plant the sprouted seedlings in separate holes. Sometimes I combine: I sow part into the ground, part into a box.
In the latter case, I shift the planting date to a later time. It could be mid-April.
It is easier to navigate by the following criteria:· 10-12 days pass from the time of laying the seeds to their emergence;
· From the first shoots to the time of planting in the holes - 50 - 55 days;
· The total amount of time before disembarkation is 60-67 days.
Selection of seeds for sowing
When buying seed, I do not pay attention to such quality as yield, since the soil is everywhere different and no matter what agrotechnical means are used, sand or loam cannot be turned into black soil. The main criterion for choosing is resistance to diseases and pests.
I definitely temper them: First, pour hot water (temperature about 50 degrees), then cold.
Soil preparation
I try to keep the seedling soil loose. To do this, I make the following mixture: I bring turf from a pine planting, add ash at the rate of one spoon per kilogram of soil and mix.
Ash plays the role of an antiseptic. I do not take land in the garden, because it can contain various infectious pathogens.
The soil mixture can be prepared differently, but it should be based on turf or peat.
Seedling care
I pull the first seedlings so that they do not grow with a "brush", otherwise the stem of the seedlings will be thin, unstable and fragile.
I always dive seedlings, then the roots are voluminous and dense, the shoots are low, but stable. Before picking, I treat with any suitable fungus agent.
Sometimes I plant it immediately in separate pots. More work needs to be spent, but the seedlings are not injured: first when diving, then landing in the ground.
