Orchids are my favorite flowers, so I have many varieties of them. I often have to propagate such plants: for a gift, to buy a new variety or to save my favorite flower.

As a result, I came to the conclusion that the simplest and most effective method of propagating orchids is through the peduncle. I would like to share little tricks and nuances of this process.

How to grow an orchid

Only an adult plant that is more than three years old can be propagated. It should have at least 4-5 leaves and a healthy root system. The best time to breed orchids is spring.

After all, in winter, flowers are gaining strength, preparing for the future growing season.

To grow a new orchid, I usually follow these steps:

1. I cut the peduncle closer to the base with a disinfected sharp knife.

2. I divide it so that there are three buds on each part, and the length of the handle was within 12-14 cm.

3. All sections (of an adult plant, cuttings) are treated with a solution of brilliant green. This will protect the damaged orchid from infection.

4. I put sphagnum moss in a container, moisten it. I lay out the cuttings from above in a horizontal position. It is very important that the kidneys are directed upwards, they should not be buried or covered.

5. In order to accelerate root formation, I treat the substrate with a biological stimulant for orchids.

6. To create a greenhouse environment, I use a plastic, re-sealable container with ventilation slots. It is also permissible to use any container that can be covered with glass on top.

This guarantees the high moisture content that is essential for rapid root formation.

7. I place the container in a warm room. The temperature in the latter should not fall below 25 ° C.

Important! Sphagnum moss is most suitable as an integral part of the substrate for all varieties of orchids, since it has bactericidal characteristics and is able to retain moisture well.

Maintaining the necessary conditions

An important part of caring for cuttings is periodic hydration. I do this with heated water using a spray bottle. Watering schedule - every 3 days.

Note that the scions also need good lighting. But I do not recommend placing the container in the sun, so as not to provoke a significant increase in the temperature inside.

If additional lighting is needed, I install fluorescent lamps.

As a rule, after a month, the first leaves and roots appear on the cuttings. I transplant them into prepared separate pots. With proper care, young plants will bloom after two to three years.
