How we made "Khrushchev candy"

A family living in the south of Ukraine shared with us their renovation in the "Khrushchev apartment".

Where did it begin

Many of you grew up in apartments built in the 60s and are familiar with the "delights" of their layouts. Kitchens where the refrigerator takes up the lion's share of the space and two people can hardly unfold. The washing machine is in the kitchen or in the hallway because there is no room for it in the bathroom. We live in the south of Ukraine. Most of the buildings are old type. Our family is no exception and we are tired of it.

Construction tetris

Long puzzled over the redevelopment of the hall, hallway and kitchen. We decided what and where to put. We suffered a little. They drew a plan to scale, cut out the details of the interior separately and began to move around the plan as in the game "Tetris". Gradually it became clear where to move the walls, where to demolish them completely, and how to arrange furniture and appliances.

The eyes were afraid

As a result of solving the puzzle, it became clear that it was necessary to demolish the walls between the hall and the corridor and between the hall and the kitchen. The passage to the kitchen past the entrance to the bathroom was divided by a wall. One part went to the bathroom. This nook was occupied by a washing machine. A shelf for small items was made above it. And on the other side of the wall a niche was formed, which was solemnly occupied by the refrigerator.

What have we won

When the rebuilding was over, the benefits of the new layout became apparent.

• Visually, the apartment has become much more spacious.

• The hall has become a little wider.
• The laundry washer is in the bathroom, and above it is the detergent shelf.

• The refrigerator has ceased to take up space in the tiny kitchen, as it is in a niche.
• A built-in cabinet was made over it, in which cereals, tools, plates and cups are stored. By the way, the cabinet was assembled from the parts of the shelf that hung above the sink.
• Cleaning is now much more convenient due to the large area that has opened.

• The air conditioner now works for both the hall and the kitchen. This is especially convenient in summer, when it is time for summer harvesting of vegetables and fruits, because the heat in our country is higher than +40.

Profitable business

Such repairs will cost a minimum of costs. You will need 3 drywalls for new walls. Old walls are easy to clean as they are made of plaster. We did everything ourselves. There were no particular difficulties. Except dust. But it won't be long.

The hall, kitchen and corridor were glued with the same type of wallpaper of different colors. This is how the zones were designated.

Many of our friends come to us to see how we handed over our home. Now our apartment has become more comfortable.
