How to choose the right honeysuckle sapling before buying so as not to be upset in the Summer

The first fruits of honeysuckle appear in spring. Despite the fact that it bears fruit almost until summer, you can enjoy the fruits in the spring.

This is the main reason I love her so much. Given its composition, rich in nutrients, vitamins and trace elements, it is especially relevant at this time of the year, when there is the greatest likelihood of developing vitamin deficiency.

But, blue honeysuckle berries can help solve this problem. For this reason, I would like to tell readers how to choose the right seedling of this plant.

Choosing the right seedling

In my practice, honeysuckle bushes never grew more than 2 meters, but all sources write that it can grow up to 3 meters.

I don’t know if this directly affects the fruit, but even following my method of selection, you can still get fragrant berries this time of year.

Often, honeysuckle, by the way, is used as a fence, only unlike raspberries or blackberries, these bushes do not have thorns, but tall varieties will have to be chosen here. Probably, it is they who are able to grow up to 3 meters.

I grow honeysuckle exclusively for the sake of the fruit and always choose undersized varieties. I must also say that not all honeysuckle is edible, there are also decorative varieties.

So, when choosing a seedling, I am guided by the following rules, which have never let me down:

● bushes must be 2 years old, 30-40 cm high, preferably with 2-3 branches;

● pay attention to the condition of the branches, do not take dry or damaged shoots;

● honeysuckle bark may peel off - this is normal in this crop;

● the roots should be healthy and firm, I advise you to get rid of the branches without buds immediately.

And finally, my main secret - I always buy different varieties of honeysuckle before planting. As practice has shown, it is better to plant 3-5 varieties at once, which will increase the likelihood of good pollination.

The same variety within its species can be poorly pollinated, which will lead to a small number of fruits. The optimal choice is the pair varieties that bear the most fruit.

Once you understand how this plant grows and reproduces, you can reproduce it yourself.

You can do this by dividing a bush that has already borne fruit by cuttings or layering. You must determine the method that is right for you.
