Why does every gardener need to plant Honeysuckle in the New Year on his site
Working as a landscape designer, I often deal with all kinds of exotic, unusual plants. But if we talk about something unpretentious, universal and possessing a lot of advantages, then first of all, I advise every gardener to plant honeysuckle on the plot in the new year!
If your priority is to grow everything that you can eat, you need to start blue honeysuckle. Elongated dark blue, embellished with a bluish bloom, berries are tasty, slightly sweet and aromatic. They are processed into jams, confitures and even liqueurs.
In addition, the fruits of this honeysuckle serve in late summer and autumn as food for many birds useful for the garden that fly into the site.
But if you want to bring beauty around, improve the fence, hiding the territory from prying neighbors' eyes, add design with a shady patio or gazebo - it is better to choose decorative honeysuckle - this is the name for a group of many varieties.
There are shrub species of decorative honeysuckle (alpine, golden, Maak, veil, Tatar, Maksimovich) and those that are vines (honeysuckle, Hecrotta, Brown, Telman).
Many varieties of honeysuckle produce elegant berries - red, orange, yellow, black. Only they are inedible and even poisonous.
But of course, for one appearance, it is difficult to recommend the plant to everyone! But honeysuckle is not only beautiful.
It has a lot of other advantages:
1. Even with the longest and most complex breeding history, hybrid varieties are excellently propagated by cuttings or layering, inheriting the characteristics of the parent plants.
2. Honeysuckle by its nature is not afraid of spring return frosts and quickly recovers from them.
3. Ornamental honeysuckle loves the sun, but also feels good in the shade.
4. The plant is not demanding on the acidity of the soil.
5. Even a novice gardener can handle two pruning of decorative vines (in autumn and spring).
6. Honeysuckle does not need complex fertilizers. But it responds well to the "classic" introduction of nitrogen in the spring - contributing to its active development.
7. Many types of honeysuckle attract not only birds to the garden, but also beneficial insects.
I want to emphasize that in the ranks of honeysuckle there are some surprisingly capricious varieties, but they are rather an exception to the general rule of unpretentiousness.
