Pros of combining a kitchen with a living room. Over time, the disadvantages came to light
Our reader shared her repair with us.
In the age of the Internet, in the absence of your own imagination, you can turn to the experience of other people, professionals in their field. If you wish, you can create the apartment of your dreams, considering various design solutions and implementing them according to your vision.
When designing the house, I initially considered the options for combining the kitchen and living room. My idea came true and in this article I will share the nuances that came to light in the process of living.
So, let's consider the advantages of such a layout in detail.
- Increased space
Due to the connection of rooms, the room visually expands, is filled with light. It has long been noticed that in a small room even thoughts are small. In our case, the area that was allocated to the kitchen and the hall is 27 m2. If the kitchen is fenced off, then 10 m2 will fall to its share. The hostess spends most of her time in the kitchen, so I had a natural desire to maximize it. As a result of zoning, the hall does not seem small and the kitchen is perceived as more spacious.
- Interesting design
Delineation of space, recently often used by designers. Thanks to this, the apartment is transformed, it has a modern and non-standard look. In our case, the bar serves as a partition.
- The whole family in one place
I have already noted that I spend many hours in the kitchen. It is difficult to pay attention to loved ones if they are in another room. But the layout assuming unification allows you to communicate with household members even if they spend their leisure time in the hall.
- Accommodation of guests during the celebration
I like holidays. I enjoy cooking for guests. Therefore, when the question arises about the location of the event, the scales tilt towards the house. If the hall were autonomous, it would be difficult to accommodate a large number of guests. Our layout allows tables to be placed across the kitchen and into the living room. Thus, there is more space at the table and guests feel comfortable.
Over time, the disadvantages also emerged:
- Spread of odors
When cooking, smells naturally fill the room. When I bake pancakes or pancakes, I feel like a hedgehog in a fog. Ventilation is not able to instantly eliminate odors, so it takes time for constant ventilation.
- The slightest mess in the kitchen can ruin the overall impression
The need to keep your home clean is natural. However, when the kitchen is a continuation of the living room, then even a mug left on the countertop of the kitchen unit introduces dissonance, it is that trifle that makes the room look sloppy.
- Furniture rearrangement options are kept to a minimum
As a rule, household items are placed around the perimeter of the room. In our case, all walls have openings. It is not possible to place a rack or cabinet. Shelves were conceived in the partition, they are built-in and, of course, exclude mobility. Thus, the options for the location and filling of the hall with furniture are minimal.
- The boundaries of personal space are scattered
If such a layout is ideal for communicating with the family, then when the need for a private meeting arises, the flip side of the coin comes to light. Sometimes there is a desire to sit with a friend in the kitchen, share secrets, chat heart to heart. At such moments, all household members, as if by wave of a magic wand, gather in the hall. The extended space eliminates intimacy and in some cases creates psychological stress.
Each bird builds its own nest based on its own preferences. The advantages and disadvantages reflected in the article will help you decide on the choice of layout, take into account all the subtleties. Which option is closer to you? Share your opinion in the comments.
