Wooden grandeur of Irkutsk goes into oblivion
Time passes quickly, this applies not only to human life, but also to human creations. Did you know that in the city of Irkutsk, Irkutsk region, which is located not far from Lake Baikal, you can still find a large number of architectural, historical monuments of magnificent wooden architecture?
These are the estates of the Decembrists, exiled to Siberia and forced to settle here with their families, and estates of numerous merchants and landowners who conducted their "business" here, as well as houses of simple townspeople.
Interestingly, most of the old houses, many of which have long been over a hundred years old, are still used by Irkutsk residents as residential buildings. Despite the fact that among them there are those who sank into the ground from old age almost to the second floor window!
The largest number of such wooden buildings can be seen on the central streets of the city. Some of the owners converted them into guest houses, shops, cafes, while restoring the facade and strengthening, updating the building.
In others, museums are located, for example, the well-known manor of the 19th century in the city of Viktor Platonovich Sukachev, a public figure and philanthropist. Exhibitions and various events are held on its territory, including impromptu balls, which are of interest to tourists.
There is a well-known complex of museums of the Decembrists, for example, the house-museum of S.P. Trubetskoy. and the estate of Volkonsky S.G. The so-called "Decembrist evenings", which are dedicated to preserving the history and everyday life of those times, as well as holding various creative literary and musical evenings.
However, there are also those houses that are exposed to the influence of time, so to speak, more noticeably than others. This is due to the fact that there is no one to look after them and preserve these architectural monuments.
Unfortunately, over the years, some of them are removed from the status of an architectural heritage, and are simply demolished. This is aggravated by the fact that they are located on the central streets, where there is a great need for building and the land is more expensive and prestigious. Moreover, cases of deliberate arson of such houses to "liberate the territory" are quite common. The Administration simply does not have enough money to maintain so many historical buildings.
