What an average Spaniard's apartment looks like in southern Spain. Tiles on the floor everywhere
Today I will tell you about the interesting facts of Spanish housing that you will certainly have to face when you come to Spain. You need to get used to them if you have plans to stay in Spain for a long time. Many things surprised me. I'll start in order.
The tiles on the floor are everywhere. Wooden floors in southern Spain are discouraged. What is this for? In the heat it becomes clear. Tiles and marble create a pleasant coolness in the house. At the same time, there is no heating in the houses. This affects not only the south, but also the north.
Large apartments have two bathrooms, which have a toilet and a bidet. One of them has an entrance from the parent's bedroom. This is, of course, unusual, but very convenient.
One of the distinguishing features of an apartment in Spain is the presence of a furniture set in the style of "Czech set of 75" made of dark wood with a lot of glass. All this gives a slightly depressing impression of a Soviet apartment.
Another surprise is the presence of a room in Spanish apartments called a patio. This is a kind of well that runs inside a residential building. Basically, the patio serves as a drying room.
When you ask a Spaniard how many rooms he has in an apartment, he only counts the number of bedrooms. The hall in a Spanish apartment is always large with a dining table for the whole family. The bedrooms are very small, intended only for sleeping, with a minimum set of furniture. In our usual view, there are no hallways in the apartments. But on the other hand, you can often find long corridors.
The lack of window sills in the apartment was also surprising for me. And outside, of course, they are made of marble.
Kitchens are generally small and dedicated only to food preparation. There are quite a lot of kitchen appliances, but no electric kettle. Water is boiled in an ordinary ladle. Why? It's still a mystery to me.
I believe that all these inconveniences, from our point of view, have a simple explanation. It is the climate and mentality of the people that influence the customs and organization of housing. And for me personally, their Spanish way of life is close. And you?
