Why did I buy a transverse chain saw

Clearing the garden involves not only pruning young pagons, but also removing thick, dry branches and old dead trees. Using a hand saw and a hacksaw is tedious and time consuming. In such cases, a mechanical tool comes to the rescue.

Before, I never even held a chainsaw in my hands, although I watched it work from close range. Therefore, I had some idea of this chain tool and understood its advantages and disadvantages.

Why did I choose electricity

I will say right away that I did not really want to deal with a gasoline tool. Although I clearly understood that I was giving up mobility and use anywhere, at any time, in any weather (even in the rain, even when cutting an ice hole, even far from power sources).

But for me, other priorities turned out to be more important:

1. Lower price.

2. Higher level of security due to lower power (I read about "kickback" on the Internet).

3. Easier to operate.

4. Less weight.

5. Less noise at work.

6. I don't want to deal with internal combustion engines.

I have been using an electric chain saw for 2 years now and have never regretted not having bought a gas powered tool.

What criteria did I operate when choosing a model of an electric saw

Since I already dealt with a power tool (I previously purchased drills, a screwdriver, angle grinder), then, choosing an electric chain saw, I put forward the following requirements for a future purchase:

1. The location of the engine is transverse. That is, perpendicular to the tire. I have a proactive attitude towards bevel gears that are equipped with cheap household power tools. Simply put, I do not believe in the longevity of the engagement of such a gear pair. Therefore, I deliberately went to the inconvenience of operating a saw with a transverse motor, in order for the gearbox to be equipped not with a bevel gear, but with a cylindrical gear.

Transverse arrangement of the engine

2. Reducer housing - metal. Only in this one can the details be securely fixed. This is from practical experience.

3. The presence of an emergency protective switch-shield. Safety first.

4. Power in the range of 2000 - 2500 watts.

5. Price. I no longer remember the limit, so I will not focus on this.

The rest (the length of the bar, the weight of the saw, the pitch of the chain links, the tension mechanism, etc.) was not important.

Did you manage to implement all your requirements in the purchase?

To begin with, I have completed all the points except the second one. The metal body was present only in chainsaws or in expensive electric models. Therefore, I chose the "Proton PC-2100", which, although it did not have a duralumin reducer, but the drive gear was attached to an aluminum alloy plate. It ended with toothed stops, which created the illusion of reliability.

Metal housing base

The saw did not disappoint me. She handled trunks of pears, nuts and apple trees with a diameter greater than the length of the tire.

It is easy to cope with such a barrel diameter

What complaints do I have about the purchased saw

Since my purchase budget was very limited, I have no big complaints about the electric saw. And yet I would like to warn about the presence of some inconveniences:

1. Due to the "protruding" engine to the left, cutting vertical trunks low above the ground is possible only on the right side. Sometimes it's a problem. But I was mentally prepared for this, as I wrote about above.

2. The chain tensioning screw is close to the bar. It is not comfortable.

3. When I forget to tighten the chain, it flies off and gradually destroys the plastic cover.

Vulnerabilities

4. The kit comes with a screwdriver key, which can be used, but inconvenient. I recommend having better quality auxiliary tools with you.

5. I reckless to buy special chain oil and fill in everything that comes to hand. Because of this, there is a grease taste in the air during operation; objects in front of the tire are splashed with oil; and its remainder should be drained from the tank, otherwise it will flow out in a few days.

6. A very short power cord that is often pulled out of the extension cord during operation. But realizing that this is for security purposes, I do not make "improvements" (I do not reinforce the plug in the outlet, I do not "sharpen" the cable).

Additional purchases

Immediately after buying a chain saw, I purchased a spare chain and made a long carry (30-40 meters) to reach all corners of the yard.

After the first “caught” nail, the chain became 5 teeth shorter. Therefore, I bought a shorter tire.
