Get your sleigh ready in summer! Condensation on a metal door: 4 methods to fix the problem
The problem with metal doors is condensation that appears during cold weather. Homeowners are familiar with the picture when streams flow along the door, puddles form in the hallway, slopes become damp and covered with fungus. Self-isolation is the best time to tidy up your home - we offer 4 methods to eliminate condensation on a steel door.
Method one
It is also the most reliable - this is the installation of a second wooden or plastic door from the side of the room. This will create a temperature buffer zone and prevent hot air from coming into contact with a cold surface. An important point when creating a so-called mini-vestibule is tightness: an additional door block should be without cracks and gaps. This method works great and eliminates condensation. An expensive alternative to the mini-vestibule is an external extension, which will also create a buffer zone.
Method two
Full insulation of the canvas and box. Here you need to act in a comprehensive manner, namely, to carry out a number of events - one or two actions will not bring the desired result. To obtain the maximum effect of the work, it is advisable to carry out in a warm time, since it is better to remove the door leaf.
What should be done
- Insulate the box. If it is made of a profile, then it must be drilled in several places and filled with polyurethane foam with the smallest expansion. This is important because the maximum expanding foam has more voids and low thermal insulation properties. If the box is made of a corner, then it must be sheathed with a casing to reduce freezing of the metal. A thin insulation can be laid between the corner and the casing.
- Eliminate gaps and cracks, create a structure tightness using rubber seals. And also the tightness refers to the door lock, or rather to the keyhole. It is better to put a sash on the lock, which will prevent the penetration of cold air into the room.
- Cover the outside of the canvas with energy-saving paint. If the canvas, for example, is not factory-made and is easy to disassemble, then the inner part can also be treated with an energy-saving coating. You can apply a foaming anti-corrosion coating to the back of the face of the metal, which is used to treat the underside of the car. It has heat-insulating, noise-insulating and anti-corrosion properties.
- Strengthen the insulation of the canvas. This can be done by any means - with the help of reflective insulation (foamed polyethylene foam), ecowool, mineral wool, foam or polystyrene foam. Here you need to navigate by the door itself. If the door is of a home-made design, then it is best to insulate it with penoplex from the inside, and close it with MDF panels on top. If the door is factory-made and it is impossible to disassemble it, then it is better to sheathe it from the inside with foil insulation. It won't be very pretty, but more or less effective.
Third method
The use of heating devices. For severe frosts, you can create additional heating of the door structure by installing a warm floor cable in the slopes or a thermal curtain above the door. At the same time, electricity consumption will increase significantly, especially when using a thermal curtain, but since the method is working, it cannot be silent about it. A thermal curtain, for example, perfectly protects a garage door or roller shutter.
Fourth method
Outer door trim. The metal has a high thermal conductivity, which is 300 times higher than that of wood. The best option would be to cover the door leaf and frame with clapboard. Reflective insulation can be inserted between wood and metal. This will reduce heat loss, especially in cold, windy weather.
