Where to buy building materials during self-isolation: promises of officials and the real situation

Self-isolation and forced weekends provoked massive home renovations. What if you have time and nowhere to go? The correct answer is to tidy up the home. It is logical to assume that with the beginning of the repair epidemic, the demand for building materials has increased. But another question arises: where to get them if most of the stores are not working? Let's take a look at the situation.

What officials say

According to representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the demand for building materials has increased. This is due not only to the beginning of the summer cottage season, but also to the fact that people have a forced weekend. The Ministry of Industrial Trade of the Russian Federation allowed the possibility of resuming the work of construction stores, whose activities was suspended in connection with the introduction of a self-isolation regime as a measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections.

According to Viktor Yevtukhov, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industrial Trade, e-commerce in Russia is underdeveloped. Those online stores of building and repair materials that continued to work remotely are not enough to cover all demand.

For example, there is data on the growth of demand for construction products by 296% over the same period last year. On average, online building materials platforms were up 136% year-over-year. Summer residents, owners of plots for construction and other land are massively buying drills, screwdrivers, saws and other tools that can help in the repair and preparation for the gardening season.

Therefore, there is a high probability that hardware stores will be reopened everywhere - of course, with all security measures being observed.

What's really going on

In reality, buying something for repair is problematic. Some shops work: you can buy a light bulb or a crane box, but problems arise with other goods for construction and repair. Large retailers include a standard response to calls: due to the epidemic, we are temporarily closed - you can order goods on our website. But how to buy, for example, wallpaper, tiles or laminate without seeing the goods live? There is no guarantee that they will bring exactly the same material as in the picture.

With more serious and dimensional building materials, the problem is even worse: many bases work behind closed gates. Sellers say - send the car, we will ship it, we have a problem with transport now. And those who provide transport services say through one thing: we do not work in quarantine. Delivery is becoming problematic, the situation with the coronavirus is worsening, roadblocks appear on the roads and drivers are simply afraid to leave. Apparently, construction and repairs will have to endure until the end of self-isolation.
