Preparations completed for the assembly of the largest fusion reactor at Tokamak
For many decades, humanity has dreamed of taming the energy of the sun. And every year more and more powerful installations are created. And literally at the end of last year, the construction of the building was completed, which will house the world's most powerful thermonuclear reactor, Tokamak ITER.
The construction of this gigantic building took almost 9 years. And it is designed in such a way that it can fully withstand high-temperature and high-speed reactions comparable to those that occur in the bowels of our star.
Project ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) actively developing with 1985 of the year. And engineers from 35 countries.
For reference. Tokamak are special devices shaped like huge donuts. And they are designed to control high-temperature plasma using specially placed magnets.
A significant disadvantage of already existing reactors of this type is their inability to maintain an elevated temperature for a more efficient installation. And it turns out that while more energy is spent to control the plasma than it is generated.
Now such installations are in operation as: the British Tokamak (which reached 2018 year working temperature in 15,000,000 degrees Celsius) and the Chinese apparatus is still in 2016 year withstood the overheated plasma for 102 seconds, and in 2018 brought the operating temperature to 100 million degrees Celsius.
But in comparison with the designed ITER reactor, all the previous reactors simply pale. After all, the calculated power of the assembled reactor will be at least 10 times more powerful than that of the most powerful of the existing thermonuclear reactors.
According to the ideas of the engineers, the design capacity will be 500 MW (for comparison, the record for Tokamak reactors is 16 MW).
According to the project, the reactor will be fully assembled and put into operation by 2025.
Well, it remains to wait quite a bit and, perhaps, we will witness the formation of a new era in the energy sector.
