April - it's time to plant zucchini for seedlings. I do this every year and I'm happy like an elephant
Fiery fireworks, comrades vegetable growers!
I used to sow zucchini immediately, in the old fashioned way, in open ground. And I didn’t think that we shouldn’t bother with this culture. But somehow, a couple of years ago, I decided to try to plant zucchini in advance for seedlings. And you know, the result pleasantly surprised me!
Is it worth it: the obvious advantages to me of growing zucchini through seedlings
- The first and most important plus for me is that the crop of "seedling" zucchini can be harvested 2 weeks earlier. This is understandable: time is saved until the seed germinates in the ground and the seedling grows
- Based on the previous point, it is not surprising: I harvest the crop longer and more in quantity. My whole family loves zucchini, so the fruits are always long-awaited and by the way
- It happened that out of 10 seeds sown on a bed, only 5-6 germinated. So that the land would not be empty, we had to urgently finish sowing... And to lose in terms yet. And the squash seedlings take root very well, so my mini-squash plantation forgot about the annoying mistakes.
For everyone interested, I will briefly write my rules for growing seedlings, which I regularly follow every year:
- Success starts with choosing the correct sowing date. I start work exactly 1 month before the date of transplanting into the open ground (when the weather becomes warm enough). In my region, this is usually mid-March.
- Seedlings do not take up much space. Firstly, I don't need a lot of zucchini, and secondly, the plants do not need a large amount of soil. I use milk cartons cut in half with holes in the bottom every year..
- Nothing highlight. I believe that the April-May sun is quite enough.
- I do not do any top dressing, because at the stage of growing seedlings, they simply do not need zucchini. It is better to focus on watering: make sure that the land is always a little wet.
- In early May I start take out young zucchini to the street. Of course during the day, gradually increasing the duration of the walk. So zucchini get used to outdoor conditions and will be less stressful after planting in open ground.
