World's smallest light bulb made from graphene
Graphene is a special material, the unique properties of which have been discovered by various scientific groups around the world. So, through the efforts of an international scientific group, it was possible to obtain the smallest light bulb in the world, in which the spiral was made of graphene.
Why is it needed
Probably, the first question for many will be: Why is this necessary at all?
Now, this is not really just research for the sake of research. And with the help of such miniature and most importantly effective light sources, you can come to grips with the creation of computerized systems where light is used in the work, and not electricity.
And also in the creation of transparent displays of atomic thickness and all kinds of optical microchips.
How a graphene light bulb works
Structurally, a graphene light bulb is a miniature carbon sheet suspended over a silicon substrate. And two microelectrodes are connected to this structure.
So, when current is applied to the electrodes, graphene heats up almost instantly to a temperature of 2500 degrees Celsius. And at the same time, it begins to emit light intensely.
Moreover, the radiation is so strong that it can be seen with the naked eye. Do not forget that the whole structure is just microscopic.
Why graphene
The uniqueness of such a lamp lies in the fact that if you use not graphene, but any other material, then at such a high temperature the entire installation will simply melt from overheating.
But graphene behaves in a completely different way: with significant heating, its distinctive feature is that its thermal conductivity rapidly decreases. This means that only a small central section of graphene is exposed to heating.
In addition, graphene is able to emit at different wavelengths due to changes in the temperature itself and the distance to the silicon substrate, that is, a universal source is obtained.
Invention perspective
The technology is still far from industrial use, and scientists continue to work to increase the efficiency of the device. So the product's prospects remain vague. We just have to wait.
