The summer cottage season begins soon, and each gardener must decide what exactly he will grow on his site. If you are planning to get a harvest of cauliflower, then you need to know about all the tricks of growing this vegetable.

Growing conditions

Landing place. It is best to plant seedlings in an area that is well lit. But cauliflower is capable of producing crops in partial shade. Cabbage grows well where there were legumes, potatoes or cucumbers last year.

Watering. The plant does not tolerate waterlogging or stagnant water. But you need to water the crop often and abundantly, especially in dry weather.

Temperature conditions. Cauliflower will grow at an ambient temperature of +7 to +20 C. But if the heat outside is +30 C, then the plants will need additional watering.

Otherwise, heads of cabbage will not form, or they will be small in size.

Soil composition. It is not necessary to apply fertilizer over the entire area of the garden. It is enough to put a tablespoon of wood ash and a good handful of humus in each hole (about half a liter).

You can start feeding only after the seedlings have taken root, got stronger and began to develop. I feed about once every ten days. This crop reacts best to organic fertilizers.

Disembarkation dates. Sowing seeds for seedlings takes place from 15 to 20 March. Planting seedlings in open ground is possible only after the air temperature reaches + 15-18 C.

Secrets of Successful Growing

1. The distance between the bushes should be at least 50 cm.

2. At the beginning of cultivation, each plant must form a sufficient amount of leaf mass, otherwise the ovary will not form. If the seedlings are kept in pots, then this can inhibit the development of the plant.

3. The seeds can be grown in a shared box, but I recommend using individual cups. I determine the readiness for planting by the number of leaves, there should be at least 5 of them (three are enough in the box).

4. To avoid damage to plants by a cruciferous flea, I sprinkle the bushes with wood ash. It is also worth keeping an eye on the egg clutches and destroying them in time.

5. The soil under the bush must be constantly loosened and mulched.

6. If the stem is bare, it must be immediately covered with soil.

7. At low night temperatures, I cover the bushes for the night.

8. The heads of early varieties need shelter from bright sunlight. To do this, pluck a few leaves from the bush and put on the ovary.

9. I begin to remove the cabbage heads as soon as they reach the optimal size, which corresponds to the variety. Otherwise, they will crumble and lose quality.

I cut off the head with several leaves. This can increase the shelf life.
