Ginger is not just a spice that you can buy in the store as a dry powder or root. In fact, it can be successfully grown at home as an ornamental plant.

As a result, you can get an environmentally friendly product that is successfully used in cooking, medicine or for the manufacture of home cosmetics.

Under natural conditions, this plant prefers the tropics and is grown as a perennial. In the middle lane, it can be grown as an annual plant in a garden bed or on a windowsill.

To achieve flowering from ginger, I plant it in containers in the fall and bring it indoors. Beautiful inflorescences of bright red color appear only in the second year.

White ginger has a mild flavor and contains a small amount of pungent substances. Black, or Barbados, ginger has a blue flesh and a richer, pungent flavor. There are also decorative and medicinal varieties. But white ginger is most often found on sale.

Rules to consider when planting and growing

1. First of all, it is worth considering that the root gains pungency and spice only after 10-12 months. Therefore, I advise you to start germination in January or early February.

2. Planting material is not sold in nurseries or flower shops. A root purchased from a regular supermarket is fine for growing ginger at home. It should have an even color, several buds (the more the better), and a dense, elastic structure. Ginger that has been frozen is not suitable for planting.

3. Root growth has a horizontal orientation, and it is worth choosing a wide and shallow container for growing. It is not necessary to buy a ceramic pot, a plastic one is enough.

4. Before proceeding with planting, it is necessary to disinfect. To do this, it is enough to immerse the planting material in a bath with a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes.

5. I use sphagnum moss to stimulate growth. To do this, I cover the bottom of the container with a thick layer of moss, moisten it and spread the ginger roots. The container can be placed closer to the heating radiators. It is also important to maintain the correct humidity level.

6. I plant the roots in the ground only after the buds have hatched. I divide the rhizomes only before planting. I cut along the jumpers. On one piece of rhizome, I leave two or three buds, which have already hatched. I sprinkle all sections with activated carbon powder.

7. Be sure to put a layer of expanded clay on the bottom of the container. The root should not sink completely into the soil. Part of it should be open. In this case, the kidneys will grow much faster.

8. In order for the bud that has hatched to develop faster, you can arrange a small greenhouse. To do this, it is enough to cover the container with foil or glass.

You can also use a transparent plastic bag to equip the greenhouse, in which you need to place a pot with a plant.

Do not forget that the mini greenhouse needs to be aired twice a day.

9. After the plant forms full-fledged stems, I remove the film and sprinkle the roots with soil.

10. For the full development of ginger, it is necessary to provide 16-hour daylight hours (you can use a phytolamp). Do not keep the plant in direct sunlight - burns are formed. The optimum temperature should be from +20 to +28 C. During the rest period (from November to January), fluctuations from +5 to +15 C.

11. The tubers are dug out after the stems and leaves are dry.
